Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - respect for northerners

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

...my respect for you northern fixed riders grows. it's around 36 degrees in north-central Florida tonight and I thought my joints were going to freeze.

shorts? er, well, my pants were almost shorts when one pantleg got caught on the chainring.
everyone here gets excited over this kind of weather...breaking out the giant coats, scarfs, beanies, and sweaters upon sweaters.

I've been rockin out with the temp in the teens and low twenties the last couple of days. I'm ready for winter. BRING IT ON!! :D
Oh, and as a former midwesterner, those are the real heroes. We got it easy over here compared to the frozen plains.

at least midwesteners and new englanders have decent snow removal programs, here in maryland we have little better than a big pick up truck with a shovel duct taped to the front... stoopid budgeting issues...

Think again. Detroit stopped snow removal except on a few key routes a few years back. But then that's D-town, and that's like a whole other country... Or planet.

I know and worked with some folks in Detroit. I even got a tour from the mayor's office through the trailer park on 8 Mile Road that was the setting for Rabbit's trailer in the movie. :) I won't slag Detroit, it's a rough scene. I've worked with community based organizations in some of the most disadvantaged parts of the city and it's pretty wild. It's hard to believe that it's the US. I've worked in East St. Louis and I thought nothing could compare until I went to Detroit.

Anyhow, off topic.

I have great respect of you hard core people in the north too. I live in SW VA and I have been freezing my ass off the past few days. It's been in the 20's when I've been riding. Today I commutted to work/school and it was 16 degrees. Luckily I have a pretty short commute. Brrr...
I just wish we'd get some snow as I'm getting sick of the color brown!

This past week it has been "cold" in otherwise Hotlanta. I checked the weather one morning and it said that it was 36 but felt like 19. That's rough for someone who has lived her/his whole life in Georgia. And my point is...and my point is...I have no point?
I too respect you northern winter fg riders.
I also respect ya'll in the summer. The love is 365 days a year.

It was 16 deg in VA this morning. I guess I did not move far enough down south. I need a balaclava. hmmmmmmmm baklava.

I don't own enough clothes to go out today, the windchill is physically dangerous.
If I put on that much insulation, it's just not comforable to ride.
I've pretty much put my bike away for the winter. Oh well, spring is coming.

WEAK Appledude! I was out in Philly chilly every day (and night) this week. Don't give in to the cagehead mentality, let alone take, gasp, THE BUS.

so far it's been a mild winter here in southeastern michigan. tuesday it was not quite 20 °C and i wore a ski helmet and goggles and was warm as toast. the quiet was nice, too, as was the orange outlook afforded by the goggles. when i look down and see all that salt and grit and crap spraying up onto my bike, i'm glad not have any fussy cables or derailluers down there to clean every day.
detroit's snow removal policy reflects 1) lack of money and b) relatively little snowfall. i think they will midify things a bit when the superbowl is in town...

Here we are having the usual drizzle every day at temps just over freezing. Dark when I get to work and dark when we leave. Even walking is dangerous when visibility is less than ten feet. Biking is weekends only for me for another month. In February the daffodils flower and the world is a cheerier place.

ici, that's really sad.
if I lived in that, I'd be listening to Polyphonic Spree everyday to prevent depression.
Some of us on the east coast would love to trade weather with ici.
As we say in eastern canada-"ya don't have to shovel rain"

22f with a windchill of 6f as I head out the door to go work for a few hours or 5. Sad it is that winter is here but not really here yet. I like it though, cold beats heat in my book. Plus what I'll go through this winter is nothing compared to my buds in Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal.
Don't let winter keep you in! For those who don't want to ride in bulky clothes, Don't! Thin layers keep you feeling finer anyway.
15f this morning. I created my own wind chill. And was my own heater.

How far north is this post talking about? I'm in Oregon, Portland, and it's pretty damn mild here. I've been biking with just a sweater and a jersey... light gloves...

I'm here in Minny-apple-less, and today it's like, somewhere around 3 degrees! Yeah, that's kinda cold for me when I'm riding. I try to think about my destination and the reason I'm going there when it's this cold.
Here's a good idea I came up with during my first season here: I threw my gloves, scarf, hat, and one of my outer-layer sweaters in the dryer for an half hour before I went out on a ride. THAT kept me nice and toasty, even though the temp was in the negatives. That might not work for everyone because of the sweating factor, but it really kept my blood temp at a safe level for riding. :p :p

portland is becoming my holy grail. i loved the city when i was there, and the weather is always decent. it doesn't rain there like it does in seattle, does it?
It's getting pretty chilly here in NYC. The wind has been a real pest, but streets glossed over with ice is gonna be worse.
Today was the day to pick up the new bike. Unfortunately, it started sleet/snow-raining a few hours before, and then the temps dropped and there was snowy ice on the road.
But I wanted that friggin' bike home. :D Never really rode a fixed gear much before tonight, so it was quite the learning experience in this weather but I made it! :D

We got a few inches here in Boston right now, temps down in the teens, and the wind is hitting 30mph. Of course all that says, "great day for cycling" like nothing else! Got out the mountain bike and went and bought myself a book.
Man, I'm really upset that I'm going to be flying out tomorrow morning to visit the fam for the holidays. Just when it was getting good!

Don't worry! Unless you're staying with the fam until April, I'm sure there will be plenty more - we live in Boston, after all.

Yeah, but I have an unnatural abiding love for snow. Last year this time we'd just had that awesome blizzard. I WANT SNOW! :) But there will be more, it's true.
12degrees F in NYC ! WOW and I coming to visit soon..

7 degrees right now in Boston. I just got back from returning a zipcar. My mountain bike looks like trash, there's so much EVERYTHING on the street. When it's this cold it's almost nice to be spinning that 2:1. It helps keep a guy warm! ;)
I'm thinking about going out for a night ride, but I don't have a headlight on that ride and I have a personal rule about that, so I probably won't.
After today, tomorrow will be like a heat wave here. 22 degrees in the morning.
I can't wait to ride this bike in to work!

Yeah portland's mild weather is fine unless constant overcast drives you crazy... I dunno. It rains here pretty often, maybe not as often as Seattle, I'm not sure. Right now it's just windy- like push you over into on-comming traffic windy! :b
minus 7 celcius today, no wind thankfully...
