Hi,

I've been a riding a long time now (over a year). I do lots of club rides right now, but I'd like to start racing soon.

I am very safe, and only go down maybe once every ten rides or so, at the most. However, I am worried about other riders not being safe in a race and was looking for some sort of protection. Does anyone konw, do they make pads for racing, like what they do for martial arts and stuff?

I am signed up for my first race next month and looking to get something before then.

Thanks.

You crash in one out of every ten rides?

I'm sure he meant 10 years.

Umm, right?

If you crash that often you are not ready to race. You will be a hazard to yourself and others. On top of that, a year is not a long time. I have been riding for ten years or so, raced quite a few races, done countless group rides. I have crashed twice.

you shouldn't race. not for your own safety, i don't care about you, but for the people you will take down. don't do it. please don't do it.

This thread is troll-tastic! Yeah, you should show up to your first Cat 5 crit in full pads. That would be awesome. I'd recommend football or hockey gear. I'll bet no one has seen that in a long time (like at least a year).

???

What are you doing to crash so often?

The data does not lead to the conclusion you made ("very safe").

I can honestly say if I crashed ever ten rides or so I would never get back on a bike. Nobody should crash that often.

Where do you live? I want to follow you around the course with my GoPro from a nice, safe distance. Hey, I've got a 10% chance...

I use these. They have the optional forearm tool to help block those A-hole sprinters too!

We get one of these "cycling armor" threads every year.

If you want to wear some padding, I'm sure the sporting good store can hook you up with some elbow and knee pads. Also some lacrosse shoulder pads.

Or, head over to the motorcycle shop and get an armored jacket and some protective gloves.

Don't forget the full face helmet the downhill bikers wear.

We had one guy that crashed twice this year (group rides, not races). We still haven't let him hear the end of it. :D

Presumably, from a good distance. (We had a crash in a group ride this morning. Not bad but not minor. The rate of crashes per ride overall (not per any one rider) in my groups is much less than 1 in 10.)

Actually the guy is a really good / safe rider. I wasn't there for the first crash but it was just one of those things. His second crash I was there. I hate to say it but all of us (four of us) were going a little too fast down a windy single lane road, like pretty much all of us do from time to time. A truck came around a blind curve going a bit too fast but not flying. The truck went into the ditch to give us as much room as possible. Three of us were able to stop, he wasn't. His options were go over the hill which was straight up and down, hit the truck, or lay the bike down. He made the right choice.

The guy driving the truck was very nice and stopped to check on the other rider. We all apologized to him since we were just as much in the wrong as he was. The funny part is that the guy that crashed is a doctor, pretty much the worst one that could have crashed had anyone needed help. :o
