Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hey,
I'm a student and I REALLY want a new road bike. I found one that looks great on Kijiji (an old Miele), but I'm not sure if they are asking for too much ($280). The link is below...

I've never bought a road bike before so any advice would be very helpful. Thank you in advance!

Maybe a little high. It would help to know which Shimano Group is on there. Other issues are the tubular wheels, which will require new tubular tire and the biopace chainrings.
I would float out an offer of $225 if it's your size.

Bike is gone now, unless the link is just broken. To score the good deals on craigslist you need to be able to buy immediately or else the bike will be gone before you get the chance to research it. This knowledge comes with time, or if you have a knowledgeable friend you can ask for help.

Welcome to the Bike Forums. If you want a vintage road bicycle cheap, spend some time learning How To Find Bicycles (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/FREE_SITE_1/FREE_SITE_2_FINDING_METHODS_1.htm) and you will be well on your way to finding something and likely at a very good price.
If you want a bicycle and will accept one from Thunder Bay, let me know. I have lots to select from, depending on the size you need (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/Site%20Contents/Bicycle_Basics/Buying_Vintage_Bicycles/Bicycle_Buying_4_RiskFactor_1_Page.htm). You can reach me through my website, if you wish.
And, the strike when the iron is hot advice is right on. Old road bicycle on Craigslist do not last long. Be prepared, cash in hand every time, to pounce.

+1 Stay away from tubular wheels, if you are just starting with the bike thing, you want clincher wheels. I see that the ad is gone, but for what it's worth, Mieles are pretty decent bikes, in general.
If you don't want to get ripped off, get educated on bikes. In any financial transaction: cars, boats, houses, RVs, and yes, even bicycles, the person with the most knowledge WINS. Its a very competitive market out there, and many markets in Canada are higher priced than here in the US.
The good deals do not last long enough to get an answer to: "Hey, is this a good deal?" The so so and high priced deals last of course. Need to be educated on the size you need, and what makes a good bike, within your budget. Do not expect to get a $500 bike for $250 on a public sales forum like Kijii, C/L, or ebay. When that happens, the bike goes fast, literally in a few minutes. And then it reappears a week or two later at 2X. And around here, the higher priced bikes last longer, even if they are a good deal. There are a lot more people with a $200 budget, than a $500 budget. Adjust those figures up in an affluent or hot market.
