I am new to mountain biking and am looking for some help. I purchased a single speed Origin 8 Scout 29er and have realized that a geared bike would probably make my life a lot easier as I get more in shape and used to riding. Are there some recommendations as to the best way to turn my SS into a 1x8 or 1x6?

Buy a rear derailleur, rear wheel with a cassette freehub, cassette, rear shifter, inner bash or jump stop, outer bash, and cables. Install the stuff.

You could also go the Alfine 8/11 route with that frame. I have an Alfine 8 on my commuter/tourer and I love it. There were some people trying them out with MTB with success, but you would have to read up on that. I don't think I would personally like the weight in the back tire, but you never know until you try.

You bought the wrong bike. Sell it and buy one with a 3x9 or 3x10 drivetrain.

It's got 120mm dropouts so 5-speed freewheel would probably be the easiest derailer route.

I'd probably go with a IGH, though. SA 5-speed. Maybe 3-speed.

You could always get a bigger cog and coast more 'til you get buff, then put the littler cog back on. Or smaller chainring.

Sry, no - - 128 spacing; but with steel, couldn't you fudge an 8mm splay (and/or super-thin locknuts)?

Totally. Good ol' steel is easy enough to stretch in the triangle area while you stick a geared wheel in there. I think you might even be able to get an older 6/7 speed freewheel wheel hub in a 128, though(I Think, not certain). Then just add the other few bits you need to change those gears and you're good.
