Bicycle Mechanics - Bottom bracket removal: how do I do it?

I had the bottom bracket bearings replaced by a bike shop less than 500 miles ago because they were worn out and causing a loud knock throughout the frame.

Now, there is a distinct scraping sound coming from the same area. The scraping sound is there when using either of the chainrings, with heavy and light tension on the chain, but only when I am in the saddle. Out of the saddle, no scraping.

I want to learn how to remove and replace the cranks and bearings myself because I am tired of bike shops f**king me over.

What tools do I need and how do I remove the cranks and bearings? The only part I see that a tool could go into is the 10mm hex on the right side.

Any info anyone has would great. thanks.

doesn't really help...I don't know what type of bottom bracket this is/what type of cranks, and therefore which tools to get.

obviously the bearings are internal...do I need a square or splined crank puller? which tools to remove the bracket itself?

Nor do we know these things with the very small amount of information you have provided. If you want to learn, you are going to have to work at it a little bit. ok...middle of the spindle says BB30.

Would I be able to remove this BB30 and replace with a GXP external bearing type? I don't get all the compatibility issues.

dang. thanks man. from what I have learned so far, it sounds as though I should be able to order a pair of new BB30 bearings, that BB30 park tool, replace the scratchy bearing and get rid of my scraping sound. I think the scratchy bearing is one of the bearings original to the bike, over 4000 miles ago.

in my experience these types of bottom brackets do not last long and suffer from water intrusion. if you are comfortable, you can drill a drain hole in the frame

If you have a BB30 it doesn't matter what the best type is, as you are stuck with the type that the frame is designed for.

All the BB systems have pros and cons, there isn't a perfect system out there, would just learn to maintain the system you have.
