I recently started doing some single track riding with my Hardrock and I would like to start upgrading some of the components. My total budget for the upgrades is $500. The first upgrade is the fork. I have a $250 budget for a new fork and I would like to get the thoughts on decent performing products in my price range. Then I'd like to swap out the crankset. Again, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'll be using crank bro pedals as I currently have them on my roadie and I really like them. Thanks.

Don't worry about the crank. Even if you shed weight there, you most likely won't notice that upgrade. Either put that money towards your fork money or get a set of hydraulic disc brakes.

Is there a big performance difference in mechanical disc brakes when compared to hydraulic units? Also, what about shifter units? How do the lower end shifters compare to a more expensive product and what is the advantage? Thanks again.
I have a 2011 hardrock sport disc. So far the first thing has been the brakes. I upgraded to hydraulic shimano SLX. Those are pretty high end and, being perfectly honest, probably a little overkill for what the bike is. But I found a great deal and they're awesome.
The stock avid BB5's are really not great. Hydro brakes have better modulation, more power, less need to readjust, etc. The BB5's I had to adjust constantly after rides. Not so with the hydros. Don't spring for low end hydros though.
For what it's worth, avid bb7's are good. probably the best mechanical discs you can buy, and not a whole lot more than bb5's, if you prefer to simply stay with mechanicals.
next thing I want is also a fork. honestly the fork is probably going to be the biggest upgrade for the whole bike, with brakes being a close second, IMO.

There won't be a huge difference between cheap hydros and high end mechs. However, decent hydros will blow mechs away, especially the low-end Tektro mechs that come on the Hardrock disc. People will tell you that hydros are a pain to maintain...but they're really not at all. Bleed 'em every once in a while, and that's it.
Better drivetrain will stay adjusted longer. I would leave the drivetrain as is on this bike. It's a 7-speed setup. By the time you upgrade that to 3x9 or 2x10 or whatever you feel like running, change the brakes, and change the fork, you may as well just buy a new bike.

There are two upgrades that you can easily transfer to another bike if you decide to buy a better unit later on, the fork and the wheels. Personally, on an MTB, I always upgrade the fork unless it's a high end bike that already has a really good fork. On my 05 Rockhopper and 05 FSR XC, I moved up to used FOX F-100's. I also upgraded another MTB to an F-100. In all three instances, I never paid more than $300 including shipping and was very satisfied with the used F-100. Just something to think about.
As for the wheels, ebay has some really good deals on MTB wheels, but that wasn't one of the upgrades you were looking at.
Yes you can transfer hydro disc brakes, but it's more difficult than the fork or wheels and your new bike will probably have hydraulic discs anyway.

Thanks for the advice! I may go for the Hardrock sport disc model. On another note, I also found a shop 2 hours away that has a 2011 Cannondale SL2 26er for $799 plus tax and a 2011 Cannondale Flash F3 26er for $899 plus tax. I feel like pulling the trigger on the Flash and feel like it is a good deal but the price is more than I originally wanted to spend ($700). Should I just suck it up and grab the Flash instead?
