Mountain Biking - I dont know what kind of bike this is. help?

i found a a bike by a dumpster and i was wondering if it is worth my trouble to mess with. it says mt shasta on the frame and is a dark blue/black color paint. any ideas on what it might be? thank you for the help.

Low-end, best for transportation use or some casual riding. If it's by a dumpster, there may be a good reason, so inspect it for bent forks, crumpled frame tubes from a frontal impact, then move on to the bearings, wheel trueness/roundness/denting, shifter operation and brake systems.

Pretty good old-school mtbs. Not worth throwing much money at. If you're good at wrenching and it doesn't need many new parts, or you have a bin of parts already then it's worth it if you ask me.

I probably wouldn't spend more than $40 on it unless I rode it and fell in love for some reason.

I'll get some pics up today. The only thing that I can see wrong with it is it needs new tires pretty bad. Nothing is bent and the brakes work fine. I peeled about 5 million stickers off of it. Should be getting new tires for it today though then maybe painting it a flat black.

Put new tires and tubes on it. It rides great. Taking it to the local park for a ride here in a little bit.

Just saw that this bike has shimano decore xt brakes and sprockets. I tried to do a little research on them but I was just wondering if they were good? Also it's a mt Shasta backwoods? Any info on these things would be greatly appreciated.

Googling tells me this bike is a GT. Or atleast riddled with many GT parts. Early 90s. Pics would be nice but googling provided a few beauties

woooo XT! Never seen one so nicely specced. All I remember is Shimano A-groups and their predecessors the x00 GS groups.

Looks like there were XT equipped Shastas, the tempest model. Someone must've upgraded the RD on your Backwoods.

The backwoods still has a Tange frame though, so you're stoked. I love Tange tubing!

One was a really nice condition Bridgestone road bike that I put new bar tape and tires on, greased bearings, rode for a summer, then sold for $300. Total score.

I was simply responding to Lester who said he'd pay $40 for the bike found at the dumpster. To me, that seems like poor economics when you can have it for free.

Maybe he meant $40.00 in upgrades....
