i think i've finally come to the conclusion that i can't afford a track crankset.
...at least, not for a bike that i'm already paranoid as hell about locking up. however, harris cyclery has these sugino RD cranks in a 165mm that look quite nice. i was wondering if anyone has tried a set, or maybe knows of another road crank that comes in 165 that i might like.
I am running shimano sora road double cranks in 165. Work great and look quite nice.
they have a 130 road bcd, which will give you plenty of options with chainrings as long as you don't have your heart set on a 1/8 drive train. TA however makes 1/8 rings in 130 but they are around 50 bucks, which would defeat the purpose of budget cranks.

i've pretty much decided that the 3/32 vs 1/8 debate is all crap. 3/32 is just as strong and durable for any real world situations. and cheaper.
how is the q-factor on the sora (or rd, or any other road crank that might be suitable)?

danscomp.com dotek cranks in 165mm $30 chainrings there are like $15 and in 1/8. Thats what im running. Solid cranks, no bling factor though.
The Sugino RD's come stock on the new Bianchi Pista's - I bought one a week ago to replace my fallen steed. Compared to the old Sugino's I was running on the old bike, they're comparable. They feel stiff and sturdy and look nice. No compaints thus far.

harris also has the 110 bcd bmx cranks. I think it's easier to find 1/8th in 110 bcd than 130 bcd. they're half the price of the suginos, but you have to put up with the huge freaking logo on them. (I've heard it comes off pretty easy though)

bbbllleh! i don't care about 1/8. i mostly just want a real durable, okay looking crank with goodish q-factor.

dude I have a set of dotek cranks and they have a regular bmx q-factor and make me feel weird as hell while I'm riding 'em. They may be stiffer than the new campy pistas (and I can say they really are) they feel weird as hell. I just got a pair or dura-ace cranks and bb for $150 on ebay and they feel stiff as hell and have a very natural stance to them while I'm riding. It's possible to find good track cranks for a good price if you're only patient. I know it's a virtue that many of us (I included) do not possess but if you can be patient it is possible to find a good deal here and there.

Here's (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=56195&item=7121610984&rd=1) someone selling those for about $15 less than Harris.

170mm though. i've been seeing those auctions for a while...someone should tell him how many more sales he would get if he would list some 165s.
