Classic & Vintage - Seattle Bike Swap on 12 February - meet/greet/buy/lunch!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Alex Moll and I plan on attending. The fun starts at 0900 and goes on until 1400. Same location as last year: Seattle Center Exhibition Hall on 225 Mercer Street.
We plan on meeting up after all the fun at McMinnimum's - where we had lunch last year. Should be a nice half-day out :)

I am new to bike swaps. What goes on at this event? How much stuff is there to buy and see (I'm wondering if it is worth a trip from Portland). Is there a similar swap in Portland?

The Seattle Swap is fairly large, and usually very crowded. Still fun. Some years, I don't find much of anything - but then, I don't need much, and the stuff I want is pretty obscure. I'm happy to find a tool, an old book, and maybe a spare bit or bob. There's a lot of NOS clothing and parts of more recent manufacture, and also a fair amount of MTB stuff. It's not exactly a C&V Mecca - like some of the swaps in the midwest or back east.
Last year, however, there was a spectacular Colin Laing, going for $325 (complete bike.) It was too small for me, but I seriously thought about buying it for my son to grow into. I did another lap to think about it, and by the time I got back around, it was sold.

Sounds good, DD. Let meet, greet and you buy lunch!:p Not going to buy much but I should be there.

Looks as though we'll have quite a crowd :)
My cell, so we can link up: 360-632-8088. I'll take the lead on coordinating hooking everyone up for lunch time/location.
Hopefully I can come away with spare parts for my new 8-speed wonder-bike ;) And some more black cycling togs!
DD
Bummer I won't be there this year. Got in line before 8am last year and were about 20 deep in line - best position we'd ever had. The first 2 hrs is pretty crazy but it's still a blast. Have fun everyone.

I think what would be a great idea is if we kept our eyes peeled for others. Maybe have a list of cell phone numbers so we can shoot a text or something when we find it...
Who knows? Maybe a BF member already has the stuff in their bin...

I'm in for sure now (crossin my fingers worked!). Got your #. What's the plan then, DD? Just call or text upon arrival?
Drillium Dude

How about a call upon arrival (my phone will not allow texting)? We'll all meet near the entrance (by the consignment sign-in table would probably be best), say, around 10am - that would give everyone a chance to be inside and perhaps even make at least one circuit of the tables...

Have fun. Don't forget the photos...

I didn't see this until after I had made plans for today. Mine involve getting dirty on my Yo Eddy. It would be nice to meet up with some local C&V'rs but it just won't be today. Have fun!
Perhaps we can plan a local C&V ride later this spring?

Well I missed out on the post luncheon since I didn't follow up on this post but:
Cane creek campy wheels - 120
Tektro long reach brakes (with free tall boy of Rainier) - 20
Braze-on front derailleur clamp adapter - 1
Ultegra external BB - 10
FSA Compact drop bars - 15
Speedplay pedals and cleats - 20
Admission fee - 5
Grand total = $191
Not too shabby.
How'd you all do at the swap? Any scores?
I got a few Cinelli stems, Record BB, Campy chainrings, new bar tape, chain cleaner and a few knick-knacks all for under $70
Sadly was'nt able to trade anything outta my stash though

Scored a pair of Thule roof rack trays, a track cog, a sram pc-850 chain, a pair of Continental tubulars, a pair of chain rings for the wife's MTB, and "The Yellow Jersey"(book) for $57 (w/admission!) -Not too bad. "Post Luncheon" was great. Putting faces to names on the forum is pretty cool. Neat surprise running into Kelly, he and I have been friends since we were kids. I had no idea he was on BFCV though! Guess that goes with using an alias on line. Topping the day had to be seeing Drillium Dude's Davidson in person, love that bike:)
Edit it's a pc1090r chain. Saw the 8-speed box, hollow pins and slitted plates and jumped on it. Still not bad for $5 but I have no 10-speed stuff:(
Just to name a few things. I got a NR seat post for a buck, early 600 aero levers for a buck, Look Delta pedals for a buck, white Turbo for five bucks, Cinelli 1A for five bucks, Campy NR rear hub with skewer for five bucks, 2 Cinelli 1R for ten bucks, 2 campy headset for ten bucks, Specialized Toupe saddle with ti rails for ten bucks, early C-Record non-quick release levers with decent hoods for ten bucks, 9 speed DA STI for twenty, 9 speed DA rear derailleur for twenty...I scored big time and I didn't even have to pay to get in.:thumb:

Is it new and original length? How much do you want for it?
Ahh so you didn't get everything you wanted!
Nice haul though, I'd buy one of your Campy headsets if you wanna sell...

It's not new. Not sure on the length (haven't checked). It's not even split at the master link, why would someone cut it like that and leave the master in the middle!? This will either live in my parts bin or go on my FG 'till I break it... Hmm maybe it did break already.

Howdy...
Because of things beyond my control the day/evening prior to the Swap, I missed out on a lot of sleep. Therefore, when I finally got back to the island I took a shower and went straight to bed :)
So, photos and a recap tonight when I get home from work - okay?
But I will say now that it was great to "put a face with a name" for the first time in a one case and catch up with others for everyone else. Too bad we couldn't get everyone else hooked up - maybe next year!

Let's do a planned ride when the weather gets nicer... I'm kind of bummed I missed the lunch.

It was nice seeing everyone!
As for treasures... I scored a complete IBC hydraulic brake set, a nearly new SRAM ESP 9.0 carbon rear derailleur, a nice Easton/Girvin mtb bar with ESP 9.0 shifters and Altek cnc brake levers, a neon green Concor saddle (lol =D), a Concor Lite (ti rails), a craptastic mtb wheelset for my ghetto big kids SS BMX/MTB build (farm bike! I hate walking acreage) and a Forte SS chain tensioner thing-a-ma-bob. So basically I was after parts for midschool MTB's. Nothing too special but it was fun none the less. Wasn't keeping track of how much I spent but I went in with $200 and ended up with change after lunch so that's cool I guess.
Was thinking about you all on my drive to Spokane yesterday. Bummed I missed the swap and the get together. It was a lot of fun having lunch and sharing cycling stories last year. Definitely up for a C&V ride when the weather is better.

Saw someone snag a mid 70's Schwinn Paramount with chrome lugs for $300!
Serotta Colorado III for $200.
I got some pants that didn't fit :P
Not much else seemed priced well enough to interest me.
I'm assuming that was your beautiful Davidson on the end of the row near the door Drillum?
Fantastic bike!

Had a great time on Sunday - and it was great to see some of you again (Alex, Abarth, Kelly) and meet Andycapp for the first time. Cell reception was spotty at best inside the Exposition Center, so we didn't do as well hooking up as we might have. But we'll be getting some group rides together come Spring via PM/cell.
I took the Davidson down and set her up in the Consignment area. No, not crazy enough to sell her right away; I put a fanciful $3700 price tag so that nobody would try to buy. My intention was that any of the BF members going through could get a look at her in person.
I went with about $325 and spent $271. What did I get for my money? Have a look:

Campy ti-axle track pedals were $150 (pedal wrench included), 1978 SR RD with alloy bolts for $100, Pearl Izumi gloves for $10, ten 8-speed Exa-drive cogs, eight spacers and two lockrings for $5, 5-speed Cyclo-Pans alloy freewheel for $5 and a pair of Sidi three-bolt white cleats for a buck.
Here's a closeup of the RD; appears almost NOS:

I didn't really go with the intention of finding anything but consumables for the new 8-speed setup; I figured I already had everything I really ever needed/wanted but a couple of rare items - and I checked off those two items with the Campy pedals and derailleur. I was pretty much done and was just moseying around meeting people after 10am.
Finally linked up with Andy around 11am and we agreed to meet up at McMennigans at noon. That's when everyone else showed up, too. Good food, good eats - and it seemed that Abarth got the best deals by far. I mean, how do you score an alloy Campy NR seatpost for a buck?

Alex will have to relate the story of the Ti Lepper saddle he scored. At the end of the day, it was great to meet up with quite a few BFers and share some chow and stories. I really want to go riding soon with Abarth - he's great at telling stories and has a superb sense of humor :) And Andy has some great tatoos while Kelly has really got his beard growing out nicely :) And Alex - well, Alex is Alex, just the way I like him - thanks for buying me lunch, brother!
Looking forward to some rides with this crazy bunch this Spring/Summer!

Looks like you had a great time at your swap.
What a charming bunch of bike addicted folks.
Hate to say it though, when it comes to looks the BF group from Minnesota give up nothing in the looks department. :)
...and wow, can we spend money at the swaps.

It was - and thanks for the positive vote :)
I brought it down just so that those BFers coming to the swap could see it "in the flesh" if they wanted. Glad it didn't rain on the trip down since it rode on the roof rack!
Too bad we missed you there, but we'll have to get contact numbers so we can get a few group rides in the spring/summer.
