Classic & Vintage - Thinking about doing a harlequin wrap on my '88 Specailized racing bike.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What colors would you do a Harlequin wrap on this?:

Pink and blue? Here's (http://flickeflu.com/groups/1001218@N23)some inspriation for you.

I've never seen a harlequin wrap I thought looked good. Also, it seems to make the bar look like a multi-colored, swollen hot dog.

White and teal (aqua).

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't...

It should be complementary to the frame, so pink/white, white/teal or pink/teal. The trouble wil be matching the colors to the frame.

- But if you get lucky and can match both the teal and the pink, I think the pink/white would be best.

Funny, I hear that same phrase often when I wear lycra cycling clothes.

I like a two tone instead of the harlequin. If ever, harlequin is for solid-colored bikes, IMO.
Whatever Freudian thing it may be about, I don't want to know....

Running harlequin on a multicolored bike is like plaid and paisley together.

Makes me want to lay off the acid.

I think there's enough going on with that bike already...

I agree with this, it's a nice time capsule as it stands, the harlequin wrap would be a bit much.

Bulbous, also tapered!

That's kind of the idea... Trying to push the tripping limit a little like a curly framed Hetchens. So far, I'm liking the ideas I even think black and white would work.

Here's an idea that I haven't really heard before - do a single color harlequin. The pattern will show close up, but from afar it will be solid color.

On the link that ColonelJLloyd (http://www.bikeforums.net/member.php/184731-ColonelJLloyd) posted, there's a black on black version about mid-way through (#47). I agree that most are hideous, particularly the ones that were done unevenly. But there are a few very nice example. Towards the bottom there is a dark brown/light brown (#83) that looks like it was subsequently shellacked that has a really nice look (at least I think so)

I had initially wanted to do a harlequin wrap on my Univega. I started a two-tone grey/white instead, but I gave up after about 4 wraps because cloth tape is hard to work with. For me, it's tricky to make things even to begin with because the tape does stretches but only under high tension. Any uneven wraps in either the dark or light color will show immediately. I was using Velox/tressostar. I do not know if this is significantly different from Newbaum's.

To make harlequin wrapping work, you need to have A LOT of patience. It helps to be good with cloth tape or cello wrap. There are few blogs about this, and from my reading of them, it's probably best to take your bars off the bike. Then you can wrap them anywhere, while doing something else (TV/radio), not hunched over the bike. You will also be able to put it down when you get fed up.

Yes. That's one I had looked at. The other one is: http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/articles/diamondweave/

I had tried to do a double wrap like this: http://briansbicyclebanter.blogspot.com/2007/05/shellac-handlebar-tape.html

Racking your brain at breakfast isn't fun, seems rather complicated, I like how the author just did his tops though, kind of cool result without being over the top:

I think these would look nice on that Sirrus. Two tone fade.
