Foo - If you could own anything as old as you...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

...what would it be?
When I get the money, I want one thing made the year I was born. Maybe a 1976 Mercury Cougar:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABrnnlGWUSE
Or a '76 Les Paul Goldtop:

Or a '76 BMW bike

What about you? Do you already have something made the year you were born?

I already have what I believe to be a 1951 Schwinn Spitfire, and a bicycle liscence plate from 1951.
Cleaning out my parents house I just found photos of me as a new born baby from 1951. I also have a Gold Pocket watch from 1926 when my great grandfather retired. I have a wooden cradle from my family that is close to 200 years old. And a bazillion antiques. Way too much.
I can't think of anything else I would want.

I bought a 1976 Cougar XR7 back in the day. It was black, black vinyl top and saddle colored interior. That car rode like it was on a cloud. Out of all the cars I have owned, this Cougar was most likely my favorite. It was not fast as all cars of the mid to late 70's were even though some of these hillbillies down here try to make race cars out of 1974 Nova or something.
Wow, what a car.

I remember your inquiry to bike forum members at that time about this rust bucket. Didn't you end up with another rust bucket? I really do not know why northerners do not fly to Florida, buy their hearts desire and drive it back home. No, they spend good money on cars that are already becoming buckets of rust. Did you know that even piece of crap cars here in Florida have NO rust anywhere?
I already have cameras, radios an bikes older than me. I have one car 19 years older than me. My other car and our camper are a year younger than me. Our kitchen table is more likely than not older than me. I've got a 120yo armchair. I'm set for old things.

I had that motorcycle. 1973 Bonneville 750cc five speed. Best handling road bike I have ever ridden to this day.
Like it was an extension of my body. Second gear would spin the tire and lift the front end about 6". I rode is across town with three people. Passed a cop going the other way, he didn't notice.
Edit-one of my friends had a mini like that, he took out the original engine and put in a much larger more powerful MG engine. Can't remember the tech details. It was FAST.

I remember that, rusty chassis if I remember correctly? I was lucky enough to have my 1966 Chevy Malibu when I was around 25 years old, old enough to have a really sweet ride that was the same year I was born but "young and dumb" enough to sell it when my wife basically told me it was "either her or the car!" I should have picked the car!

Now you're talking. I heard an interview on the radio the other day w/ a 95 yr old photographer (http://kuow.org/program.php?id=25831)and she was talking about how her first camera from the 1940s was the most beautiful thing she'd ever seen. No way to contrast the 1980-ish Nikon I had for a long time w/ the piece of crap $80 digicam we picked up just to keep the flow of kid pix moving to their grandparents.... (and my Dad only turned up his nose at my Nikon vs the one he got in Japan in the early 60s)
Back on topic, we did for several years have a Mustang a year older than me, but a '67 would have been better.
I also have a Fillmore West poster from the week I was born, Cream and Paul Butterfield were the headline acts, supported by Charlie Musselwhite.

Who have to go with the '67 427 Cobra
My wife's uncle has one*, I got to drive it away from the church when we got married.
*well, that's what it's registered as due to some original motor and/or drivetrain parts, the body from a kit

Not as old as I am, but a Mercedes touring sedan from late 70's or early 80's or so, would be a nice toy to have.
SB
I own tons of stuff older than I am. Bicycles, cameras, typewriters, my stereo, my glasses (which my grandfather wore before and during WWII), my TV is probably at least as old as I am, three of my four cars have been nearly as old to almost twenty years older than me, etc., etc.
As for stuff from my exact year of birth, there isn't much I can think of that I'd want, other than one of these:

Last time I bought a Fla car, the engine was fried from the heat. The Rover had a bad frame. It was simply too much hassle to build a new box frame for it. if I do decide on a Rover, I have a friend in Costa Rica that can help me find a decent one, though. Apparently, 50's -60's Land Rovers are common there, and they run forever, and no rust. :p It'd be a fun drive home, too, up the Pan Am Highway.
