Recreational & Family - trek or giant

Want to spend less than $500 ona Hybrid.
Considering a Trek 7300 or Giant Cypress DX or LX.
Anyone have an opinion on which is better or more reliable?

I don't know those particular bikes but they both come from companies with good reputations. I guess they will last for years, bikes rarely breakdown.

I have a Trek 7100. Bought it at the end of the summer. Have put two hundred miles on it and it is now hooked up to my Kurt Kinetic fluid trainer. I would recommend the Trek bike. With the 7300 you will be getting some better componets than what I have but that is about the only difference. Never owned a Giant so I can not really give any personal info on that but from what I have read on here you really could not go wrong either way. Go and get on them and take them for a swing around the bike shop to see which one you think works best.

Both are great. I chose Giant but wouldn't argue in favor of one or the other. Try 'em both and see which feels the best or most appeals to you.

My wife and I both chose the Giant LX after test riding both Giant, Specialized and Trek (7300). I felt the Giant was more comfortable, offered the disc brakes and rapid fire shifting. We also prefered the Giant "black" handlebars versus the chrome offered by Trek.
I've done some 20 plus mile rail trails and some shorter jaunts around the neighborhood and the Giant hasn't flinched (I'm sure the Trek is also of the same quality and performance in this area).
Whichever you choose will quickly become your favorite brand. Try them both/all. Consider the Specialized. Our Specialized dealership just didn't have a lot to offer in size and style at the time we were looking/buying and Specialized was very high on our list.

The are both great bikes, can't go wrong with either one. I would suggest taking them both for a test ride and buying the one you fall in love with. My friend just bought the Giant after riding both. Personally, I liked the Trek after riding both.

While the Trek stuff has a minor bit better performance sometimes, all my local dealers are a large bit more expensive for the models than the Giants. As he said, its pretty much Toyota or Honda?
I race and build all Giant stuff but my friends do Treks.

Ive had my giant for 3 years now. The only thing I didnt like was the rapid fire shifters I changed to grip shifters.I like not having to loosen my grip well changing over ruff ground. Very pleased. P.S. In all the time Ive ridden it I have NEVER had to replace anything.

If there are some pet nags you have with either bike, remember you can change stuff around. I've adapted an old-ish Mongoose to a hybrid beast relatively cheaply. I think for the five or so years I've had it I've not spent more than AU$200 on it. Both Giant and Trek are reliable brands and you get your money's worth with either. I'd probably go with the Giant, because I personally think that Giant would make better hybrids, where Trek are focused a lot more on road and racing bikes. Not that I doubt Trek's ability to adapt, and I'm sure it'd be an awesome bike. So much for a definitive answer eh? ;)

My local LBS has Giant and Raligh.then about 30 miles away is one that sells Trek.I have ridden a Raligh sedona.very nice bike.I am waiting for a Giant boulder.they are about the same either way.I just want to ride the Giant.I am thinking of goin out and collecting cans to pay for the bike.(want to show the oldest son that it can be done with a little pre planning.

I have a Trek, not the 7300 but a $500 dollar model.
I ride the crap out of it on straight paved roads. And I've had it for 8 years now.
But in the first year I had to repalce the seat. In the second year I had to replace
the right shifter, the hand grips. The replacement right shifter is cracked in the same place.
The front crank has cracks in it.
Other than that it's been a great ride, 1000's of miles.
But I am wondering how those other bikes would compare, The Giant, or a Fisher, etc.
I know you can't tell how a person treats his bike. But lets just say mine
are garage kept.
My weight is 160 lbs.
