high bidder will likely negotiate it down to about 500 more than the 2nd highest bid.
He was in at 2900, then backed out for a while, now appears to be making sure no one else gets it.
I'd not pay 7500 (I'd get a new bike with 11sp SR), but that sure is a beautiful group.

unbelievable price. Lovely gruppo, but seriously? Those sherrif star hubs in Century finish are hard to find indeed. Ah well, I hope some japanese geek with a nice lit display cage is happy with it.

Of all the groupo's, Record C is my favorite! I guess the current bidder is setting a new bench mark for Campy's Record C groups, so hang on to your C's until the price's go up in Spring! Or maybe all Record C's will be trading on the Futures Exchanges as Derivatives!

These prices fascinate me, they really do.
I had a long conversation with a local collector over coffee last weekend.
He purchased a fairly rare De Rosa from me last summer, and when I dropped it off, he showed me part of his collection.
It looked like the hidden warehouse from the Indiana Jones movies.
He had four C-Record gruppos in original packaging.
None were for sale, and judging by his home's location, money wasn't much of an issue.
He literally had three large shelving units in his basement with Campy gruppos in their original boxes.
I jokingly referred to a condition called OCD.
He got a pretty good laugh out of that, but his daughter didn't find the humor!
Then I posed a simple question about the future for these goodies, and he stated that he was just biding his time for the correct market conditions.
So, they aren't all necessarily off to the Pacific basin folks.

That's insane, I suppose if you want it that badly and can afford it then the sky is the limit.

I can't say that ive seen much of the century stuff sell. but even adding up the individual parts at almost twice what i'd think they would be worth It still doesn't seem to add up.

To me it is, but Steve, some folks are in rarefied air.
I should see if you can go over to his house this summer, as he has a factory fresh Vitus just like Jake's.
Looks like it was never ridden out of his driveway!

For most of us prices like that un-comprehensable. But for those with means they're just doing what the rest of us do except at a higher level. I dont hold a single thing against them, its their money to do as they please.

Correct.
I have a good friend that is in our BMW club, and he has a king's ransom invested in his collection.
No one says a word though, including his spouse, as he works incredibly hard with his practice.
...and in the bigger picture, I couldn't really care less, but I still find it an interesting diversion this morning.

Last year I passed up a beautiful SOMEC in 60cm with C-Record Century Groupo. I didn't like the way it looked so I passed on it. The guy wanted $575.00, Oh, and it was all in very good shape.

Sorry for the Japan comment. That was unnecessary sterotyping.
Gosh......Century finish hey?
If I pee on my Delta calipers and leave them outdoors for a month, would they have a similar finish??:p

if money wasnt an issue, absolutely. a custom frame dressed in century c-record is at the top of my lust list and if i were stupid rich i would spend stupid money to get it, especially if it were still on the boxes.
being newly married and my 20s that is not the case however. i will just have to "settle" for my silver c-record cranks and monoplanars on a stock geometry tommasini.

I would sell my Record C group for that but not a penny less and well I would give you the frame for free

Putting aside the fact that it's rare, and if all things were equal, do you guys like the way they look with that smoky glass finish, or would you prefer the same parts in a clear silver?

i like the way century contrasts some frame colors. if it were worth less i would still pick it pending the frame color and build.

Can someone explain the large gap? The $7500 looks like a snipe but why wouldn't it be for the minimum amount over the 2nd highest bidder?

your display stand.
I think the shiny silver version is prettier, but for a real over the top 80's bike, this will do juuuuust fine. Just make sure the paint of the frame has a lot of seafoam and pink fades. White and gold regal.

I know the buyer and he told me he is going to rebuild his old varsity he had when he was in high school. Actually that is the question...what frame from that period would one put that group on? I dont think there were many made at that time that are that special. No confente thats for sure. Maybe one of those Colnago oro things but ... you would want gold plated campy on that. A mystery indeed.

Just a note of interest. The De Rosa 35th anniversary was originally meant to exclusively be built up with the century gruppo, but the response was lackluster when shown at the various trade shows so De Rosa ended up delivering almost all bikes with "normal" C-Record. I have a set of the century delta brakes and a set of century hubs. I truly like the finish on these two components but would not go for the cranks or headset as the juxtaposition of the smoky cranks next to silver chainrings is off-putting to me, as is the mix of non-matching headset and stem finish. With the brakes and hubs this is not the case. Please also be advised that the C-record century finish is in no way related to the century finish seen on other level parts. The C-record has a depth of finish that is not seen on the others.

This means that the top bids were:
Winner: $7500+ (up to who knows what)
2nd bidder: $7499 (max bid)
3rd bidder: $4299 (max bid)
So as long as the winner didn't bid, the 2nd bidder could have won the auction at "only" $4300 () even though his max bid was much higher.

Those C Record cranks look awesome!
Anything designed and manufactured to be used, but isn't, is tainted and destined for that purgatory meant for useless things. At that price, there is no way that this gruppo will ever see the road, and that's a shame. Imagine a thoroughbred race horse that never leaves the stable, a Ferrari that is on stands so the tires don't develop flat spots, a Barbi still in cellophane. It's almost criminal.
I had to go out and look at the cleat wear on my Campy 50th anniversary pedals to recover.https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YOV6zEdm1Mg/TshxztRgIwI/AAAAAAAAAB0/Bf1Z3kzZgeQ/s800/drive.jpg
