Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - niterider minewt 600 vs 350. overkill?

hey guys, i normally spend my time over at singlespeed/fixed gear but i need some advice from you guys.

im interested in buying a niterider MiNewt either 600 or 350
i can get the 600 for about $150 shipped
or the 350 for cheaper.

does anybody have any experience with these lights they would like to share with me?
is 600 lumens overkill?
i dont have any way to reference how bright ANY amount of light is measured in lumens

also ive heard about the mount being pretty unreliable. im only going to be riding on fairly decent roads. can anyone chime in about if the mount will move with little force?

600 is good. Definitely not overkill. 350 isn't bad either, but at higher speeds or on trickier terrain, 600 is better.

Personal recommendation? Get the 600. You can always use it at a reduced output and get a better runtime. The runtimes on High are very poor on either model.

I've seen reports of bar-mounts slipping but really can't believe thats a problem that can't be fixed by adding a rubber spacer.

I gave up on trying to get the mount to grab. One small metal screw through the mount and into the bars solved the slippage problem. Of course, you have to get the light aimed the way you want it first!

The problem is the light isn't balanced over the mount. The front is much heavier & it extends far forward. If the mount were designed to attach at the light's center of gravity, there wouldn't be a tendency for it to rotate.

I've been using a Minewt 600 for around five months and really like it. I run it at medium (400 lumens), and find that is plenty of light and you get a three hour running time. The mount is functional, but could be better. I've seen the Minewt 600 for $128 or less with free shipping, check google.

Check out ModernBikes.com. I bought two MiNewt 600's over the course of four weeks. Paid $102 and $105. I ride on dark, country roads. The 600 mounted on the handlebars I run on medium. The 600 on the helmet I run on high. Excellent light. Includes a helmet mount. Wrapped some tape around the handlebar(a rubber spacer would work) and mounted the light--no problems. It's brighter than my old Magicshine 900.

I don't find my minewt 600 all that bright, personally. Partly this is because I also run an edelux, which is pretty bright in it's one spot. However, I also have the magicshine 872. Maybe it's not really 1600, but it's bright, and shines *everywhere*.

I have also heard good/bad things about the mount. Some people complain about it, but I hear the service from niterider is great (though I have never dealt with them myself)

I personally will be going with the 350... I dont feel like spending the extra cash and it is better than a 150.

This is the second season for my MN250. I usually run it at medium and it lights up a nice patch, enough to keep a 20mph pace. The 300 would be even better. More than that seems like too much $$$ to me.

I put a piece of wide rubber band that comes off fresh broccoli - works nice to lock it in place, and cheap enough. :)

i am in the same boat. i was just going to get the 350 because i though 600 could be overkill but after posting help on the forum and asking what lights i should go many guys have shared i would not be happy with 350. So i bought the 600 and tried them out last night. they work great. where did you find them for only 150 killer deal.

Consider the Lezyne Super Drive 500 lm light. $95 on Amazon. Takes standard 18650 batteries too.

I picked up a NR MN 600 and have been using it in the mornings this winter. Most of my commute is pitch black along a paved river bike trail. Winter morning speed is generally 15-16 mph with 54 yo eyes. I keep mine on the lowest setting all the time.
