Fifty Plus (50+) - Can you have to many bikes?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I found this in the road bike section and thought I would share it here.

I don't know. I would like to give it a try....
The problem is that the yard isn't big enough.

I live in a two bedroom apartment, which doesn't leave much room for bikes. I have but one at the moment, and am thoroughly entangled in the N+1 conundrum as we speak. Living in a small space may be prohibitive, but living alone gives me some options. I'm thinking of Craigslisting my dining room table to make room for a proper space to keep bikes. Never use it anyway, and I don't need anyone's approval to dispose of it.
We have four. If I had room for more, I would have as many as I had room for.

I would guess in that whole mess there might be one frame worth putting on the road or trail for that matter. You see those kind of things listed on scambay every so often an usually nary a bid.
Can you have too many bikes? Heck ya, just ask my wife. Can your mate have too many shoes, dresses, clothes, jewelry, ect. Heck ya, just ask me!
Been working on a theory to supplement the N+1 formula. The formula to explain how bikes automatically fill the available space you own.

I don't believe there's such a thing as too many bikes.
I own 27 bikes. In addition to those there are four bikes here that belong to my daughters. Once they reclaim their bikes I'll most likely fill those voids quite quickly. There are also two or three project bikes kicking around in the garage and basement.
Too many bikes? Nah, not even close!!

Heck, my wife has more jerseys, bike shoes, riding shorts, and gloves than I do! While I have more bikes than her, her bikes' aggregate value far exceeds mine. I think just the number of ski boots and bike shoes exceed the number of her dress shoes. What a dilemma;)

I'm cool with a couple of bikes. Musical instruments are my weakness.

I have 4 rideable bikes . I have several in various stages of completion for flipping . But I have been known to trade or sell all to get 1 truly great bike . My collection is improving very slowly .

A man can never have too many bikes books or tools!!!!!!
Phil85207, Once I built my touring bike and found that I really liked it, I sold the bikes it took the place of as part of a 2011 New Year's resolution.
I am the exception, I know.

You should have as many bikes as you like...as long as they are ridden. Any bike owned, and not ridden within the last year, should be sold or given away.

"You should have as many bikes as you like...as long as they are ridden. Any bike owned, and not ridden within the last year, should be sold or given away."
I respectfully disagree. What a bogus idea.
I own a couple more modern bikes that see most usage. I also have an old Motobecane from my varsity days. Put in lots of miles back then and I purchased it new. Still looks fairly close to new. It still gets a ride every now again. Went for a decade without use however. Was stored and kept good. Looking at it brings back memories and riding it even just occasionally puts things in perspective.
I considered selling it a number of times. It was a serious bike, but not their top of the line at the time. I actually sold an old car to buy it back then(nearly an even trade). When I look at what it would sell for $100-150 tops, and how useful that is to me, I conclude having it around is worth at least that much to me. Wouldn't be to anyone else without the history hence the price it is worth to others versus me is quite asymmetrical. It isn't like a car requiring insurance, storing uses no real resources causes no cost other than a fairly small amount of space. In that context I consider your value that if not ridden in a year it should be sold as actually quite rude and insensitive. Let people make their own value. It need not and should not all be the same as yours. You have no appointment from on high as to whether or not a person keeps or sells a bike they own.

If it is possible to have too many bikes, even if you did have too many, you would still need one more. N+1 overrules everything.

Yes, I have too many bikes. At last count, I have 59. Slowly I'm lowering the number, but my new high travel job prevents me from working on them. I'm donating a Schwinn to the church this Sunday so that will help a little. At one time I thought it was really cool to own all these bikes, but it's really become a bit much.
More than half are road worthy and I use around 10 of them. I'd like to get it down to 20. That would be a fun number.

I've found I can only ride one at a time, so therefore it is necessary to have 8 bikes. No, maybe 9. Aw shoot, I forget now how many I've got.

Not counting the stationary exerciser, just six right now, but getting ready to spring for another, (a folder for foreign travel). My lady friend just doesn't understand why I keep them inside the house and not in the garage. Well, I usually visit her and rarely entertain her at my place, so it really isn't a problem.

It's important to have one from each era, genre and milepost. I am looking for a pre-pnuematic safety (1886 or so) and a bone shaker.
I will need a carbon bike at some point also but I will wait for electric/hydro/socially integrated "milepost". My sig shows a few but i also have BMX, trials and two DH bikes.
Here is my oldest and newest (and a 'tweener just for fun)

One bike is to few for all-season and on & off-road usage. If I had to have just one, It would be a Cyclocross bike with multiple wheelsets.
Two is the sane choice. If I could limit myself to two, I would have a Jamis Endura Elite with a triple added and a Salsa Fargo 3.
Three is best. I would have a Jamis Endura Elite with a triple added, a Jamis Aurora touring bike and a Salsa Fargo 3.
I now have four. Four creates some overlap. My Touring bike could replace the Cyclocross bike on most rides, but it would feel less sporty.

Agree, we live in a 1 bedroom apartment and both the wife and I have "two bikes" each, there's NO MORE room for bicycles so I HAVE to be happy with N+1. :)

I had 7 bikes. One bike was stolen last year. My husband promised to buy another one for me. Now I have 6 bikes. One bike is in the shop. I do plan to buy at least 2 more bikes in the near future. I am struggling with the few bikes I have left. My friend, who is a bike wrench has 216 bikes.
When the process of collecting bikes takes time away from riding bikes, you have collected too many.
I don't like to own things I don't use, so four bikes is my limit. I also don't want anything I don't have time to properly maintain so between these two personal philosophies I am able to keep my purchases in check.

I fluctuate between 20 and 25 plus parts inventory. But in an average bike season I give away about 10 bikes and sell for a nominal fee about 5 more. We talked about starting a Co-Op but no good deed goes unpunished and it seems to do it legal the liability plus operating costs outweighs the good. Most garage sale cheap bikes are 99% there and just need some TLC. Out of a couple you can always get one that’s in pretty good working order and there seem to be an endless supply of people needing a bike to just get around or get back into riding. I tell everyone the bike is free but when you step up to a nice new bike give this one away or bring it back and I will.
Last year I found the Windsor for sale and the guy that had it was selling it to try and get bikes for the whole family. I paid him and told him stop out and see if I have something you can use. He ended up loading 6 nice bikes on a 4 bike rack and handed me back my money. I didn’t have half into the bikes that he paid me for them except some time. It was a good win / win all the way around.
I do ride all of these six bikes. Some a lot more than others, but these six I wouldn’t want to trade sell or give away.

It is not possible to have what is impossible. Too many would be an impossibility, so you see, it is not possible to have too many bikes. That just wouldn't be possible, now would it?
You need to go read the C&V.
