I got a single ear bud for Christmas and have been using it on my local training rides. The One Good Earbud™ puts both sound channels in one bud leaving the other ear open to traffic sounds.

Here is my review (http://www.biketouringtips.com/showTipComments.php?tipID=1859). In short, I liked it better than using only one of two ear buds. But, there are short comings.

On my next tour, I'll take both a one bud and two bud (with a microphone) headset with me.

FYI, if you have an iphone or ipod touch, you can change the audio to mono. This is what I do if I ride with one earbud while riding.

There's a better solution. I use Koss KSC-75 earphones. They are open-backed sport earphones which clip over the ears. Being open-backed means outside noise is audible and I'm not isolated for the world. Plus, they stay in place during exertion. They're cheap too.
