It looks like many parts of the U.S. have had a pretty mild fall so far. Well, right on cue, it sounds like some real winter temps are gonna hit next week with the actual start of Winter. Something tells me that traffic is going to increase in this section of Bike Forums. :D :D :D

I'm looking forward to it - overdressed today, it should be about the right amount of gear for the Sat night ride.... If anyone makes it out.

You just had to bring this up ;) I get to ride into work in about an hour at -7F(-21C) temps. OH the joy!

Why make fun of a Polar bear? When it's a endanger animal.

Please do your best and help stop the shrinking habitat of the polar bear.

Archie, you have no idea where I live in NY. Their is much more to NY than you think. Northern Adirondacks. I laugh at the people on the today show for saying its so cold at 25F.

Gojohnnygo . . . It would be impossible for anyone crazy enough to be reading this forum, NOT to love polar bears!

Secondly, I was right . . . Anyone who bikes at -30 (C or F) . . . either lives in polar bear territory . . . or more than likely is a polar bear in human disguise!!
:-)

Here's my 'freezing' 24 hrs forecast:
Max/min 3/-6 C (max 37F, min 21F) . . . This sounds like Hawaii compared to Gojohnnygo's residence.

I'll be commuting at 06:15 hrs at about -6C/21F . . . Last night we had non-stop pouring rain with 40/50 mph gusts/winds . . . Lovely!

Take care.

I love polar bears. The fur pelt I have wrapped around me is polar bear, it's WARM! Also, the polar bear/manatee chili I'm cooking smells delicious.

LOL . . . You guys are something.

Anyway . . . my apologies to Ranger for the slight diversion to geography and cooking . . . gojohnnygo & pistoferson are entirely to blame for everything.

It's gonna be down in the teens the next couple days. This is a big deal for the South! I'm looking forward to it, I love the cold, 'cuz you can always bundle up, but when it's 97 degrees and %100 humidity you can't take your skin off!

NOw is the time when all of that Winter Gear we "thought" was doing a great job of keeping us warm, shows it's colors. This is the real deal. WINTER CYCLING STARTS TOMORROW!!! (DEC. 21)

Geeeez! I feel bad. It's been in the upper 20s in the morning and climbs to the lower 50s by late afternoon. Around here, we call it brisk. It's only snowed once! I never complain about these temps. Very mild by comparison!

. . . Next time be a bit more specific with your jinx!

What you sent my way was NOT Arctic temperatures but rain and gale force winds which decelerated my commute to ant speed and . . . at times sideways too! . . .

I won't even bother broadcasting my temp readings this time . . . Who cares about temperature when you can't pedal the bike forward!
:-)

You guys talk amongst yourselves while I get the mud out of my face . . . Anyway . . . as I was saying . . . thank the Lord for multi-gear bikes.

Got a balaclava yesterday, what a lifesaver!

Got a balaclava yesterday, what a lifesaver!

Balaclavas are nice but as I re-learned today, they don't address all of the problems. In very harsh windchills it is hard to cover the face properly and not fog up the gog's/glasses. If you pull the balaclava up over the nose/mouth, then the glasses fog and you can't see #$@!. Fortunately i had a fleece scarf in the trunk bag that i was able to get out and wrap the neck/mouth. This worked pretty well.

HereNT

I picked up a fleece neckwarmer thing that's just a thick tube basically. It's worked better so far than pretty much any scarf that I've ever used. So far I haven't had to break out the wool facemask. So far...

Conditions on the last day of fall in Ottawa:
Temperature: -33 C (~ -25 F)
Wind Direction: In my face
Wind Speed: Strong

Gave the equipment the big test on Monday.

Verdict:
Bike: Rapid Fire shifter grease froze about 30 min's in. Need to remember to keep it in a good gear for climbing and cruising once she becomes a single speed.
Feet: not warm enough - one area needing improvement. In spite of multi-layers, still very cold. Need additional heat.
Torso: Too hot
Legs: Toasty

Face: Wearing balaclava with neoprene mask, but need a way to stop breath/moisture from getting into goggles. Took off the goggles about 5 min's in, and had icicle eyelashes in about 10 sec's, but way easier to see than with googles. No bigee, though.

Result: As soon as I get some toe-warmers, I'm ready to rock down to -30 or below. -11 C (+10 F) today and it felt like a warm summer's day. Bring on the cold!

Archie

OK, . . . tomorrow -> mind blowing extremes of 5C/0C (41F/32F)!

I just can't compete with you polar bears!

Blame it on N7, He got me to join his Cold weather cult. :D

One tip for you. If you think your going to be cold you will be cold. Think warm and pedal hard. Just keep it safe.

But thinking that you'll be warm is never a guarantee...

See how we work! It's going to be in the mid to high 40F here. Thanks guys for sending that warm air north. :p

Thank you Gojohnnygo

The truth is that I have no idea how you guys don't just freeze solid on your bikes as soon as you come out in those extreme conditions.

You're all heros.

I hope you don't mind my jokes buddy.

Stay safe.
Best wishes

Today's Ride

Left: 7 AM

Temp: 13 F

Wind 20-25 MPH N-NE

Windchill: Below 0. Unsure how far.

Gear:

Head: Balaclava (lightweight), Earband, Helmet. Fleece scarf used mid ride around face to try and relieve facial sting.

Comments: Everything was fine except for face.

Eyes: RX Glasses, Visor Gog Safety glasses over top.

Comments: Pulling balaclava over face- fogged eyewear.

Torso: Underarmour Base LS Shirt, Performance Winter LS Jersey (similar to Long Underwear Shirt), Wind Vest, and gore tex jacket. Dreaded Camelback that i will never use in winter again.

Comments: Perfect!
Legs/Bottoms: Cycling shorts, Light weight winter tights, Power Shield Tights over top.

Comments: Perfect!

Feet: Lighter Performance Wool cycling socks. Wool Hunting Socks. Thinsulate lined Hiking Boots.

Comments: Perfect!

Hands: Light fleece gloves, with thinsulate convertible gloves/mittens on outside.

Comments: Perfect!

I too have got to devise a better method for covering the face in below 0 wind chills. THis was a problem last year and basically only solved it by riding without my prescription glasses when i needed to cover my face.

Those Power shield tights... do they have any water/wind proofing on them ? I've been wearing these Slush pants from Mountain Equipment Co-op... The big problems are that they don't breath well and Aren't tight, so they continually get dragged through the chain. They accomplish what they're there fore, but not well.

I've been looking at getting some Craft outer pants... They're vented up top and have a much closer fit, while still providing some water resistance.

They are virtually windproof. Hence the name "shield." They are supposed to be water repellant but i don't believe they are water proof, although i have never gotten them wet, yet. I absolutely love the tights though. They are VERY warm and they are not really tights.

IOW, the fabric is just thick enough that they don't cling to you. They look more like a hybrid between pants/ tights, with them leaning way more to the side of tights. One nice thing about this is that it doesn't seem to add as much resistance to pedalling.

The temp on the news this morning is -5F. Windchills supposedly around -15 to -30F.

I'm really glad I bought goggles yesterday, as I'm riding in an hour.

Yep, winter is no longer coming, it's here.
