Foo - Extremely OT Discussion

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A friend and I were talking today about relationships that have started via Metafilter, Reddit, and other non-dating websites, and BFSSFG came up. Have any of you heard of or been involved in relationships/close friendships that started here on the forums? My $0.02 on the matter is that I met someone here who, over the last three months has become a close friend.
Friendships hell yeah.
In fact most everyone I've met through BF I'm friends with, and jdg is my homie.
Relationships... I've honestly never been attracted to a girl I've met on a forum. (There aren't many, but every one I've met "IRL" is a total lame sucker)
If I liked guys I'm sure things would be different, and this isn't commentary on the gender norms of internet forums, but I have a feeling lots of perfectly attractive guys use forums, where girls usually use forums differently and have to be more guarded when they use forums, especially when they meet people on them, like many online communities... also attractive girls have lots of ease in particular social situations that fulfill some of the needs(information reference and knowledge resource) that guys find easier to get online.
I can't really give you much good input on that because I've never done anything physical with any girl I've met online... closest I've come was a relationship that was reignited through facebook, and we met as coworkers in college so facebook was just the means of communication to see each other again... might as well have been a cell number. We were only out of communication for maybe 3 years between knowing each other in school then not talking after graduation, and ****ing on the blow up mattress I put out for her when she came to visit. so that's not really enough time to compare it to people you meet through online communities.
And take all of this with a grain of salt. I am not very often meeting romantic partners and I am often alone, by choice or ineptness at social situations, but I refuse to do the whole online dating thing because I feel like it wouldn't be special enough. Maybe I should just get over that and take advantage of all the hot seattle ass just waiting to get picked up online. Or maybe people like me are a valid and important part of the population in an increasingly networked world...
In general; I think it can happen and there's nothing wrong with it... but both people have to be open to it, and that's a very rare occurance. When it happens, go for it!
So, who's the hottie? ;)

There is not hottie. I'm married. Just curious. As I said, some friendly discussion earlier had me wondering about this forum.
I'm pretty sure a couple met on bikeforums because they were local and found out about rides on the commuter or the clydes forum.
They got married. Unless I completely made that story up in my subconscious (I don't think I did), its true!
Any single hot female (18-23yrs.) track racer types in St. Louis message me. Now.

This.
Seriously, if I see a girl riding a bike her level of attractiveness goes way up. Conversely, every time I see a hot girl in a (insert Lexus, BMW, etc.), their attractiveness goes down (not far, but it does go down). Unfortunately, I moved from the hot-bike-chick Mecca that is Chicago to the hot-luxury-sedan-chick Mecca that is Shreveport, LA. Terrible decision.

Also, I'm pretty sure it's the OP's fault that there is now a ChristianMingle.com ad on BF.

Christians like to mingle, too.
Don't they?
I'm just glad I met someone in college and got married. Otherwise, I'd still be single and have lots more time to ride my bike.

GTFO! My visit to Portland was cool, seeing so many girls riding at all different levels.
Btw, besides Misskaz who in bfssfg is female?

I can think of two or three BF couples that got together through BF.

It is threads like this one that send the females into hiding.
And, I imagine, they bring the female impersonators out of hiding.

Sorry about the ChristianMingle ad. Better than BigShot bikes though... There are a few besides Misskaz. Also, this isn't me trying to find someone. As I've said, I'm married. It was just a topic that came up between myself and a friend.

I met a (now) very close friend off of Nikon forums. We both were into photography, biking, and a ton of other things.
I also hung out with some BFSSFG homies not too long ago, I could see us becoming friends IRL

I've met one or two people IRL from my days of playing WoW. Cool people. Two of them I still talk to regularly and both female, actually. I'm going to one's baby shower in April and I showed the other one around when she visited SF from Montreal.
Recently met redpear, TheRealFaux, Mucky, and one other dude (I think) from BFs - awesome riders/dudes that I could see having as IRL friends.

Funny you should mention Bike Fancy. The banner image of that site, with the short shorts and thigh-highs? That's my good friend and fellow Tiny Fix Bike Gang founding member. We hope to get a photo shoot w/ Martha (woman behind Bike Fancy) soon.
(PS Your link was borked so I fixed it.)
Obviously jimmytango is talking about me when he says he made a good friend through this forum. It's been a pretty fun few months, for sure. I think I still qualify as a hottie even if we're not friends that way, right? ;) I was the one wondering if there had been any romances from bikeforums, because I was talking about another website where I know of couples that have met each other and even gotten married.
I have TONS of friends I met online. Hell, I met my husband on Friendster (or are you guys too young to remember friendster?). A solid half, if not more, of my good friends here in Chicago I met from various online forums and IRC channels. Including miss short-shorts-on-Bike-Fancy I mentioned above.
I have a great social "real" life but I would be lost if it weren't for the internet. Besides that I make my living as a social media manager, it's been so instrumental in me building up friendships once I left college/grad school. The internet is no longer the domain of pimpled Mountain Dew-guzzling nerds playing WoW in their mom's basement. All the cool kids are on the internet now.

I met two guys through the forum (evenes and klaw###, though neither post here very much) that I hang out with on a regular basis. I met gaozilla through ChiFG.
Looking forward to kickin' it with jdgesus, zoltani and cc700 this summer in Seattle.
Oh and mucky owes me a coffee and a ride if I ever make it to SF with my bike.

Someone should let that blogger know that there is more to Chicago than Wicker Park, Bucktown, and Ukranian Village.
(Confession: the only neighborhoods I lived in were Wicker Park, Bucktown, and Ukranian Village).

That is my one complaint about Martha. But at the same time, she obviously lives around there and just takes pictures as she happens upon people. So you can't really complain too much that she doesn't go 10 miles out of her way to take pictures for her random blog.

There have been many marriages, and a couple of babies that came out of this forum. Most of them met here on Foo. :)
Let's see, lot's of couples have met on the various BF forums and are now married IRL:
-sixtyfiver and donnamb (I think I got the right one)
-datajunkie and luddite
-machka and rowan
-BF founder Joe and shadiyah (spelling?)
-unsafe alpine and <3 2 ride

Without naming names, I'm aware of a couple of mods who were "talking" to each other. Unsure of their current status with each other, nor do I care to trespass on their privacy- since they both have ban hammers.
