BMX - road cyclist starting my first bmx rebuild (dyno compe)

as the title says i am an experienced road cyclist and mechanic that will be rebuilding a bmx bike.

the bike is a chrome dyno compe. from the appearance and a quick search i would say it is from the late 80s-early 90s. the frame seems in great shape and the wheels are relatively true but all of the bearings need grease and the axle threads are shot. it will also need your standard tube/tires/cables.

the build is for an underprivileged inner city kids birthday in about a month. i am willing to invest my own money in the bike but i wouldnt mind getting your input on where to buy parts and what brands are recommended to keep the price down. how much is reasonable to invest in such a project?

for simplicity, here is what i know i need:
hub axles
tubes
tires
cable
chain

here is what i want to add if budget allows:
red grips
red pedals
(i know he will like the extra color)

Not sure if you're trying for a close to OEM restore or not, but just me, tires front & rear got skinnier for the 2003 Haro Backtrail X1 I restored. Most front tires are 2.1 and the rears are 1.95 these days. The bike I restored has 2.25 front, 2.1 rear. Selection was an issue from my on-line searches also. I didn't want to go more than $ 15 per tire. Outside of that the pricier tires have a little more selection. Grips, I went with Sinz sticky, they aren't bolt on, but seem reasonably priced and have held up for the riding I do.

i did some research and the frame is a 1996. staying OEM doesnt manner. i just want seasonably priced quality parts. i think i am going to backdate the build a little and use tan sidewall tires if a decent set can be had for $10-15 each.

Porkchop BMX (http://www.porkchopbmx.com) or Planet BMX (http://planetbmx.com/shop/) should have the type of tires you're looking for. Might have a few other odds and ends you need, too. I've ordered from Porkchop, before. Always get my stuff quick.

Those look like exactly the type of grip I was looking for, when I bought my Lizard Skin grips. I'm not real thrilled with the diameter of these Lizard Skins, I gotta get a set of those Sinz grips.

where do I go about getting these axles? Do most bmx bikes use a standard size? I did some quick searches and didn't see much. I guess I thought hub repair would be common.

should be a standard 3/8" axle..
