I am going to be upgrading my GT hybrid commuter bike to use a 10-speed shimano xt cassette, chain, and rear shifter. Before I do so I was wondering if:
1. The 10 speed chain would be compatible with my Truvativ Isoflow single chain-ring/crank-set
2. I change out the crank-set would everything work with a SRAM road bike crank-set. My current single crank-set has 42T and an upgrade to 50T/34T would improve my top speed.

Any an all information is greatly appreciated. I am an amateur cycling and a budding mechanic as well as a computer nerd. I love technical information and can process as much as can be dished out. :)

From the info given, more is needed.

You say you currently have a single front chain ring, does you frame even have the capability of fitting a front mech / cable routing for this? as this would be needed if going for a double front?

What current cassette ratio / speed do you have? just fitting a 10 speed cassette may not give you any more gears at the back, just more options with in what you currently have.

Why XT? if it's a hybrid, Deore or Tiagra will work just as well with the correct shifters depending of what ratio you have.

I was thinking the same thing. this could get messy with funky clamps and zipties all other the place.
