Advocacy & Safety - Not Quite Mainstream, but Getting There

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Apparently, the most-filmed street in L.A. has gotten a green bike lane. It would be nice if that meant that we would soon be seeing commercials for banks and such that include a street with a bike lane, but apparently the film industry isn't quite ready for that.

That mile and a half of Spring Street turns out to be the most filmed stretch of street in town. Or rather, it was until about last November, when the green lane spoiled the shots that made Spring the perfect stand-in for Anytown, USA. It was the perfect street for car commercials, the perfect backdrop of stolid bank buildings, the perfect mix of marble columns and Art Deco spandrels, the perfect modern or 1920s downtown — until the wide green stripe appeared.

Now a lot of the filming has moved one block over to Main Street, according to Paul Audley, president of Film L.A. Inc.

Bummer... that would have been great way to get the rest of America "normalized" to bikes on the street... as it is now, bikes apparently will remain an afterthought, best reserved for the occasional messenger, the oddball (a'la MIB) and the rare 40 year old virgin.

Meanwhile, cars will somehow always manage to have an open road, emit some odd "sexiness," and there will always be an open parking spot... in commercials.

Yeah, I noticed that. In one there's a guy in front of his house working on or washing his bike with it fixed in a work stand, and a couple of other bikes in the commercial as well. I like the tune too, though not so much with original Jay-Z rap lyrics...

What I immediately noticed is that every one of the bikes were on the sidewalk, and out of the way.

Hey at least there was a moment pause at the bikes...

What I noticed was that the roads where the car went were always open and clear... uh, just like real life, eh?
