Bicycle Mechanics - SINGLE SPEED CONVERSION HELP! LX Crankset : Is the big Chainring Removable?

Hi ,

Trying to convert a LX FC-M569 crank into a single speed crankset, however the large chainring seems FIXED to the crank arm. Is it removable? What happens when it is worn and needs replacing?
P.S. I This is my 3rd Hardtail which I have converted to a single speed -- I have had success with the previous two bikes.

Please can anyone give me advice

That chainring is riveted to the spider (aluminum center) and is held on by a lockring on the backside of the crankarm. The middle and inner ring are bolted to the spider. If you wore out the outer ring ,you had to replace the spider. Unfortunately they are no longer available from Shimano. This however does not help help in your situation. Since I assume you want to use the middle ring, your best option is to find another crankset. I have seen people grind off the teeth on the outer ring and use it as a bashguard. I would also file down the shifting ramps so they don't accidentally catch the chain. You could always cut the outer chainring off. Both options are permanent and won't let you go back to use it as a triple later. Good luck.

so You need a different crankset, entirely, to do as you wish.

I realize now that this is the wrong crank for single speed conversion attempts.
However I managed to get the bike to work by keeping the large ring on and putting a 22t cog on rear hub. I spaced the chainline using spacers taken from an old cassette.
Ill ride the bike till the chainring wears out.

I bought a SBS crankset from niagra cycle for my SS conversion. I really like the crankset, it seems well built so far. I think it was $40...

Just a thought. They have a few different lengths as well ;)
