Classic & Vintage - Still show'in off

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey guys,
So much feed back on the last bicycle I thought I would show another bike I have.
What year is this? can you tell?
Not much is stock on this bicycle.
Nuovo record brakes, and rear deraileur
Super Record Crank
C-record "sheriff star" large flange hubs
Campy Aero Post
Did RAGBRAI on this bike in 2005. Very comfortable. Great ride.
I think its a 1972 or 73. Am I right?
Not sure if I should send this to Waterford to get repainted. Wondering if the original patina is more valuable.
 Leave the bike alone.
It is absolutely great as it is. The bartape adds a nice touch :D
That's a beauty. I love the Sheriff hubs; I just learned about these existing today.

+1 If you're seriously thinking about painting that, you need some new toys.

Orrery,,,I see you have a 83 620. Im looking for a 720 or 728 from that vintage..those bicycles ride excellently. Nothing to compare with these days. Long wheel base renolds!

I concur with the others, repainting this would be insane. It's beautiful as-is.

Look at the outside of the left rear dropout. There should be a serial number. The first digit should be a letter, followed by some numbers. Then go to this page from teh Waterford website (http://waterfordbikes.com/w/culture/paramount/paramount-dating) to find the date for your beauty.
As for the date, unless it was repainted at some point along the way, my guess is it is a little later in the 1970s based on the style of decals. You can learn about that at teh Waterford site, too. Go to their "Culture" pull-down menu to access all the Paramount info they have.

My Seriel number is B72101. from what I can make out from the page is that its a 72 built in February. Am I reading that right?

If its anything like a gun, a great original finish like that is worth far more than even the best restoration.

Yup.
That makes me think it has been repainted, because that was not the Paramount decal style in 1972. A 1972 Paramount would have come out of the factory with the "Starburst" decals - yours has the "Block" decals from a few years later. Check the photo series at the upper right corner of this page here (http://waterfordbikes.com/w/culture/paramount/classic-era) to see the difference.
FWIW, I like the "Starburst" set better - it is what Paramounts had when, as a lad, I first lusted after them.
Also, you may want to PM Scooper to get his input - he is walking font of information about all things Schwinn, and especially Paramouts. Ditto Bob Hufford.

You know what. I just called the person I purchased it from. he is a retired Schwinn dealer..I cant believe I got a hold of him. He said that it was yellow and he sent it up north to get it painted and updated the decals..Thanks for clearing that up!!

Wondering if I should get it repainted the original yellow with the 1972 decals. bring it back to original.

I don't know. It looks so good to me that I would just leave it. Even if you do get it painted, it still wouldn't technically be original, right?

mkeller..you are correct. I do tell people its a 72 but they think its a later model. Id like it to look stock..but who knows. not sure if Waterford is going to see this one or not. I was also thinking about top tube cable guides, braze on shifters and two waterbottle bosses.
Echoing others, don't do anything to that paint.

It's your bike of course, but the advice I'd give is to preserve this bike as it was meant to be. It's a period piece, and that era didn't have braze-ons. Add them and you'll forever alter its significance as such.
The beauty of this hobby is that it's still affordable for most. You can always have an alternative bike with the features you want without permanently altering a prized collectible.
Adding the braze-ons you listed will not add any additional benefit or function to this frame. As for water bottle mounts, there are some aesthetically nice modern clamp-on mounts out there.

If the paint had been original (and even as is it is an original Schwinn Flamboyant Red re-paint), it would have had these decals. Mine is a March 1971.

That's a beautiful Paramount jjhabbs. I'm envious of the Red color. I like it better than the Campus Green on my Paramount P13-9 that I bought December 2011. I also like the high flange Campagnolo hubs better and have plans to change the ones on my bike to high flange.
These guys here are a wealth of information. You should consider sending you information to Kurt over at the Schwinn Paramount Registry (http://www.kurtkaminer.com/TH_paramountregistry.html).

Mike, Ya know the sayin,' "Ya snooze you loose!" :p
For those who don't know, the frameset was on ebay about this time last year, with a BIN at around $450. Mike was negotiating with the seller about throwing in some or most of the Campy components, when I came across the listing. :o I spent about 10 minutes looking at the pictures, reading the description, and checking the feedback. I then pulled the BIN trigger and never regretted. :D
Almost immediately I emailed cudak888 to tell him what I just bought. He replied shortly and told me about Mike's interest! :o

Thank you. So is your P-13! I bought my P-13 to replace my '66 P-13 in Coppertone which was too big for me. The Coppertone was sold to a friend of cudak888's in Miami.

This thread is more like looking at fine jewelry than bicycles. Nothing beats the old paramounts!

Thanks for the comment. I like Green a lot myself and just got lucky when I found this one.
I wish I knew how to take decent pictures of the Paramount like some of the others I've seen.
