Winter Cycling - Things looking greener where you live?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Winter's been a real joker this year with warm days alternating with deep freezes. Today it snowed lightly in the morning, decorated everything with a couple cm of powder, then changed its mind and warmed up to the point that everything melted. At 5:00PM it looks like it might not even dip below freezing tonight, and the forcast is for above freezing temperatures into the weekend.
Wasn't much of a winter and could be an early spring. There have actually been green patched that managed to sirvive next to houses all winter. I'm thinking it might be time to pull out some other wheels and clean up the winter bike.

No. We've had a couple of good weeks, but Monday the forecast flurries turned to 3 inches of medium weight white stuff. It's got above freezing since then, but there's still a fair bit around. My prediction is something like last Winter. Good patches, but Winter is gonna drag on, and on.
Things looking greener where you live?
No ... not yet. Things won't start becoming green until the winter rains start (usually early April). Right now everything is hot, dry, and brown.

At this point I'm certain that if I take my studded tires off winter will return almost immediately. They are staying on.

You said it. I feel a little silly buzzing around and working up a sweat on these things, but Mother Nature still has time to throw some winter weather at us!

LOL - I just realized you're still in the middle of an Austrailian summer while most of the rest of us are waiting for a little snow to melt do we can get out the summer bikes!
Post pics!
I think you quoted the wrong person ... I'm the one in the middle of an Australian summer. Well actually, summer will be over in about 2 weeks, and autumn will begin. A few of the leaves are already starting to turn.

It IS quite tempting though isn't it?
This winter has been mild by all accounts in the upper midwest and canada. I took out the road bike for a couple hours this February. I doubt I would have been able to even consider that 20 years ago.
winter has somehow become less solid in the snowbelt.

OK - corrected!
Thanks for posting that link - it'll give me something interesting to browse through on what looks like some upcoming rainy days!
Brown Australian summer ... one of many photos. This one was taken on January 14th.

Thank you. :-) My winter bike (with studded tires) has seen many days off the past three months as conditions have allowed the road bike to get out regularly. I've set personal mileage and commuting records for four months straight now. Several normal winter projects around the house have suffered as a result...

Yep our winter has been a joke. Until last nights minor snowfall I actually had bare spots in the lawn. Normally it looks like this around here this time of year:

Duh, it's late summer in february if you are in the southern hemisphere ,
so Aussies I guess the question what was early spring like last year..?

Cool and Wet ... like usual.
So after a week of warm weather during which almost all the snow melted locally, I figured I'd get out the summer bike. Yup - it was a blast! Warm enough to drive with just unlined gloves and still work up a sweat!
Lookin' good! So next the tires got changed on the road bike and today I was planning on a road test!
Wouldn't you know it? Between last night and this morning we got 15cm of snow and its still coming down!

Not quite yet, but near the sea spring is already present. Ski traccks are getting better for me and worse for the skiiers.

WOW! Wish winter was like that here! Come to think of it - even in the summertime the scenery isn't quite that onviting for a bicycle ride!
Things are definitely greener today. We had 146 mm of rain in 36 hours, until about midnight last night. And today the grass is growing like mad.

(Sigh) definately a little jealous. There's another 15cm of snow announced for tonight followed by two days of rain and possibly another cold spell.

At this point I'm thinking the horse is having fun! Spent most of the past few days just shovelling snow! Don't care what the official records say - the height of the snowbanks say we got more snow in the past week than we got throughout the rest of the winter! This same time last year, we had just started a long drawn out rainy spring.
The forcast for Friday and Saturday is a mixture of rain and snow followed by more snow on Sunday. Sounds like a mess - not fit for horse or bicycle!

There were tornadoes two days ago. There a chance of severe storms again today. My grass is looking scruffy. I may need to get the mower out soon.

Nope, no greener, though the pear trees are a beautiful white with flowers. The only snow we got this year was washed away by the rain that followed it a couple of hours later.

We're up over 230 mm of rain in the past 5 days with the monsoons. The backyard is a jungle.

Yikes! Thats over 40mm per day! Is your house on pontoons? or at least a hill?

Yep, just skied knee deep powder snow over the weekend. snowbanks are currently the highest they've been this winter.
cute posts from australia are not really relevant to the 'winter cycling' forum IMO.

Gotta love weather. Friday was 75F and severe storms. I woke up yesterday to 4" of snow.

Actually I'm jealous on both counts! You cause you got to ski and Machka just cause she's in Australia! This week delivered a mixture of snow that turned to slush that turned to ice. And a repeat performance is in the forcast for the rest of the week.

only the calendar indicates greener days ahead. We had a touch of snow this morning with temps below freezing.

We hit 60+ degrees today. I broke down and took off the studded tires.

There's a lot of flooding going on!! And the winter rains haven't even started yet. This was all monsoons.
But it's now autumn here now (as of March 1), and things have turned green and will only get greener throughout the winter ...

OK The seige is officially over. Regardless of whatever fowl forcasts the weatherman has planned, Mother Nature has already spread the word to all the Canada Geese that its time! A HUGE cloud (too big to be a flock) passed overhead this afternoon.
But they seemed to be headed for Ottawa .... A organized protest in the capital against dissappearing wetlands perhaps???
