Fifty Plus (50+) - First 'get off' on the mountain bike

Been eyeing up a little step up jump on the trails. Haven't been able to get up enough speed to jump it as it is at the top of a short uphill after a little downhill. well yesterday I got up that speed and launched into a nice, controlled jump......until my handlebar clipped a tree :). Yup, next thing was me rolling on the ground :eek: . I got up, no pain. Started to laugh. Nice to know the eggbeaters did their job, acting like bindings on skis. Guess I had the "DIN" setting right(for my skiing friends).

I'm....so sorry....

Just like a KTM rider to take out an innocent tree....................

Glad you weren't hurt and that the Eggbeaters did their job. Pics of the 29'er or it didn't happen, though.

Being a woods rider, I'm used to clipping trees. But with the KTM, you just blip the throttle and straighten yourself out. No such luck on a mountain bike. Just part of it.
I'll go back out and lay the bike down and take a pic if that makes you feel better :). Actually, I'm gonna video that section and post it, hopefully without the fall this time.

Not necessary BBW, I'll just use the mental picture and hurt for you. My YZ just ripped them out by the roots as your EXC probably does. Sheer weight and 45+ HP does the trick. have a great weekend brother.

LOL I have vastly more KTM saddle time/tree time than on MTB, thus I am a bit cavalier about bar end placement while on my GF or Niner at times.
So yea, the thought of some uber-light little guards has been bouncing around in my head after I've smacked a finger or two while riding sans a motor.

Noclutch: Your name refer to using a Rekluse or equivalent? I've had a Rekluse on the 520 for quite some time......love it.

OK since no one asked I will. Is the bike ok? :)

bigbadwolf- no, only my MTBs have no clutch. But I'd love to get a Zstart Pro for my XCF315. Someday :)

Somebody tell me what a Rekluse is. Remember Husqvarna automatics? My friend the wheelie guy tried to wheelie one after the owner said it couldn't be done. He got it up on the rear wheel...then it shifted and over backward he went.

For mountain biking, it is not a crash unless an ER or LBS visit was required.

Rekluse makes what is basically an automatic clutch in one version. It has a disengagement lever as did the old Husqvarna automatics but you still must make your own shifts. It is pretty much a no-stall device that the woods riders have adopted and seem to do well with. Some of the endurocross riders are using the original model or the newer type with a belleville washer clutch plate installed that allows you the luxury of slipping the clutch for an extra burst when needed. Beta offers one as an option of the Build Your Own Beta program. I know quite a few hare scrambles competitors in the southeast that love them. Look for the spider emblem on the special clutch side cover you need to use for clutch pack clearance.

Thanks for that, Bill. I have been away from motorcycles for a long time and didn't know such a thing existed. For the type of riding I used to do it wouldn't have been an advantage but for enduro work I can see it helping.

You can slip the clutch with the Rekluse I have. Do i use it? With a 520? Are you crazy? ;)

As an old enduro and trials rider, I really miss the tweak the throttle, bailout option. Sure can read the trail though. Heck, the front suspension travel on my mtn bike is the same as the Sherpa T!

A Bultaco Sherpa? I had a Montessa Cappra 250 from 1972 and my mtb has a lot more suspension and waaayy better brakes than that motorcycle.

OK, I'll round it out. Sachs 125 and Ossa 250 Poineer in NE enduro's, CZ single pipe 250 in motocross, Cotton 175 and a 250 Bultaco Sherpa T in trials. Many memories in one sentence.

Don't you just hate those mean trees that see you coming and decide to bend a little further over the trail? I've had a couple of trees do that to me.

I have a 73 MC400 Maico with the aluminum coffin tank. It is in restoration a bit at a time as I find parts and needs new fork tubes. Going to do the factory style Forward Mounted Shock modification with Works Performance shocks. My 400 square barrel I had in 1975 had the same plating problem on its tubes. CZ are way too expensive now, very sought after.
