Foo - Is there a safe way to run your dog on a leash while biking?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
And is this the proper place to ask this question? I figured it was because there are so many pet threads.
Anyway, we recently acquired a pit bull named Mabel. I have taken Mabel running up and down the road while riding my mtb and holding her leash with one hand. I know that this is an accident waiting to happen. She loves it. I won't run her unrestrained. Any suggestions on how to safely do this?
Keep the leash short enough so she can't run in front of your front tire.
You are right, it is an accident waiting to happen. One good jerk and down you go on top of Mabel at that.
I would suggest buying a frisbee and taking her to the park instead.

There are a lot of bike attachments for this. WalkyDog and Springer are two of them. I used to run Bouveirs on Springers years ago and they worked well.

Not my dogs.
Thanks. I didn't know these products exist.
yes, but it involves a stationary trainer and a powered tread mill.

The answer to the orignal question is NO!. Take the mutt to an off leash park or area and let her run by herself. I saw some pretty ugly injuries to both halves of "the running the dog as I rode my bike" trick when I was working.

There's no place I can safely let her run by herself. For one thing, I don't believe in letting a dog run loose. Around here she could get hit by a truck, shot by a neighbor, get into a rotting carcass, or disturb livestock.
You think it is unsafe even with one of these devices?

Combine something like that with a trike. Then maybe.
I used to take my MTB to the beach, riding along the surf. But that was off leash. Still a ton of fun though and wore the dog out in a hurry.
Just think about what would happen if a paw got caught in the chain/crank.
