Bicycle Mechanics - I assume some sort of rubber o-ring goes where the RED arrows are pointing?

What hubs are they for? I see a lot of cones with grooves like that with shields that snap into the groove. I don't think I've seen one with an O-ring there but I haven't torn apart all that many hubs, maybe 50 or so different makes/models. All 1999 or older.

That or a lip at the end of a conical rubber seal assembly.

OTOH, it's possible that nothing goes there, and the groove is a break to prevent migration of grease and dirt across the gap.

on my suntour superbe hubs there is a metal disk that serves as a dust/dirt barrier to the ball bearings that goes in there. the part you have pictured on my hub is actually two parts that are a press fit allowing the dust/dirt disk to be removed and the race to be replaced if necessary.

Well....we'll find out if it's a 2 piece or one-piece assembly.

The front wheels of most of my bikes take cones that are overall this size M9 x 1 mm and (15 mm diameter X 12.5 mm long). I just bought 4 of these on ebay for normally less than the cost of one so we'll see....

I looked up the part number in the pic and they're for Shimano 105 5500 hubs. The original parts have metal shields like this:

I doubt they separate like the Suntours mentioned above but I've never tried. I've had good luck just kinda snapping the shields out of old cones and snapping them onto new cones, though.

A-Ha! I'll have to take apart my 105 hubs now. I thought that "seal ring" was attached to the "dust cover" but tech docs show two separate pieces.

There was a few different designs for 'seals' on the hub cones. wasn't there a post last week with seals like the gas check seals an M16 bolt?
