Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Shimano Tuorney GS derailleur,what's it's model year what's it worth?

I have a Shimano Tourney GS rear derailluer that I don't know much about & can't find much about it's age or value. Tha closest comparison I could find was a Shimano Crane GS that has direct mount instead of axle mount like mine but otherwise they seem to be designed the same. Condition wise they seem to be similar except that the Crane looks like the cage was rubbed too much with Scootch-Brite while cleaning & my Tourney is a bit more worn by the chain on the inside of the cage. The Crane sold today on Ebay for $62.21 + $7.00 shipping = $69.21 spent on it so I'm wondering if I can get about the same for my Tourney?

Your Tourney GS is from 1974-1976. It is probably worth about $5-10. The Crane GS was Shimano's top of the line derailleur during this period and was offered with the Dura-Ace group, hence the good price. On the other hand, depsite the family resemblance, the Tourney GS was 3rd or 5th in the hierarchy depending on the exact year. Unlike the all aluminum Crane GS, the Tourney uses steel for the cage and parallelogram arms. This significantly increases weight (60g heavier than the Crane GS) and decreases cost. Finally, the Crane GS will handle a 6 six speed freewheel, while the Tourney GS will only has the travel for five cogs. All this makes the Crane GS a much more desirable and higher value derailleur.

Just paid $40 for this deraileur. NOS. Short cage. Dealer has four more in stock. he just purchased stock from an old schwinn store that went out of business a few years back. They have long cage as well. Email me if you want to know the name of the shop in St. Joe Michigan.

Tuck the derailleur away for tomorrow. It just might have considerable value, one day.

A year ago I could not give away a set of 27" alloy wheels with quick release hubs. In addition to the cost of the wheel set, I have to tack on a large shipping cost that can reach and slightly exceed $75.00 to some North American destinations. In the past few weeks, I have sold three 27" rim sets and one wheel set. This morning I got an order for a single 27" rim, or rim set, or complete wheel set. Shipping, in this order will be roughly $40.00.

So, the point I am making is what appears worthless, or worth little, just might change its colors soon, and be worth more, and someday, lots more.

As for the Tourney derailleur, I have a few tucked away and, at the moment, I doubt that I could give even one away. But tomorrow might be a different story.

Thanks for your replies! The reason I posted this question is that the derailleur came on what appeared to be an old Huffy or similar brand that someone tried to convert into a nicer road bike. It had nice Suntour barend shift levers, aluminum bars & an aluminum stem that look like they're too nice for a Huffy. That's why I asked about the Tourney GS because it looks too nice (valuable) for an old Huffy but scince it's only worth $5-$10 I used it on this bike. Again thanks for the replies & here's some pics of the bike & Tourny GS after repainting/rebuild. The bike had no badging of any kind so any help in identifing the year, make or model is appreciated. :):thumb:
