Bicycle Mechanics - Silver bars

Does anyone make a 6061 T6 butted aluminum (or similar quality) flat MTB bar with a 25.4mm clamp diameter in silver? I have one that may need to be replaced but all I can find is black bars and everything else on the bike is brushed or polished aluminum. The current bar has about a 5-degree sweep and is about 550mm long. No brand name or model on the bar, the only markings say 6061 T6 Heat Treated Aluminum.

Alternatively, is there a safe way to remove the black finish from a bar? Chemical strip? Polish with black emory on a canvas wheel? Blast with soft medium like walnut shell?

Most of the time the black finish on an aluminum part is just anodizing. Sometimes you'll have a powder coated part but generally thats not the case. To remove it you could try copper wool or fine steel wool and/or a brass brush on a drill. Medium grit sand paper will work as well. You want to make sure what you're using won't damage the bar structurally and only removes the relatively thin anodizing.

These have Quite a bit of sweep and a bit narrow by today's standards but I think I'd like 'em. The cheap Kalloy Uno risers I own have a warning against DHing or jumping on mine, but they've held up to small airs so far.

Beadblasting leaves a 'pebbled' finish thats a nuisence to remove and I've found that it takes quite a bit of time with a bucket of water, rubber gloves and wet sandpaper to get rid of all traces of the surface anodizing. And its only slightly less boring than watching soap operas or reality shows or news casters on the big screen.

Wish I could recommend a fast way to do it mechanically but its really best done by hand and reserved for those special parts that have high sentimental value.

I might have some old SR mtn bars in silver. I'll check and confirm later.

Anodizing can be removed with a nylon brush after a 10 minute dip in Zep Purple Degreaser. But be careful, it's very nasty stuff. Wear googles, don't get it on your skin and don't inhale the fumes.

If you're in the market to buy new, Nitto makes a variety of flat and riser handlebars which have a 25.4 clamp. They can be had for +/- $40.00 online or your local bike shop will order them for you.

I'd also suggest checking craigslist or town's bike co-op for a used version.

Dimension makes silver bars. I know they are available thru bike shops, specifically LBS' distributor QBP. Not entirely sure they have 25.4, but very possible. Also pretty cheap.
