Mountain Biking - Old SRAM gripshift grips?

I know that gripshift is a love-it-or-hate-it deal on these and other forums, but I love them. In this particular instance, they're on an old 90s (real) Gary Fisher that I love but don't want to spend unnecessarily on - yes, you can buy new shifters for $30 but why? The old ones work fine, but the grips are worn out.

The SRT-800 grips don't fit the 400, but the 300, 400, 450, and 600 appear to all the the same. Does anybody know where to get these stupid things? There are all kinds of 800 series grips on ebay but never any of the other models. Certainly there have to be some in a box collecting dust somewhere.

hmm, can you modify any modern gripshift grip? the size of the grips is different even between my wife's SRAM X5 and the X9 she has now. (X9 has a lot narrower inner twist section, the X5 is easily 2 fingers wider.)

New ones are in the works.

I am just guessing here, but would it be possible to get some other brand of grips and cut them down? I am running a 1x7 setup right now and am really considering going with grip shifters. The bike (a '96 GF Mamba) had gripshift on it, but they were really hideous looking due to being left outside in the sun for years. I want to get my controls cleaned up a bit and I think this would be a great solution.

POssibly on both counts, but I was trying to go for an off-the-shelf solution first. The 800 series grips could probably be made to work if the rubber could be cut cleanly. I don't know. They're cheap enough that I might just pick up a set and experiment with them. I guess worst case you could always rig up something hokey looking with an old inner tube and some heat shrink tubing. It probably wouldn't last long but it'd be cheap and fairly simple.
