Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Got a new frame yesterday

and I want to put it together so badly but I'm swamped!

That and the go-bits are on my other bike right now and I'll be rideless during the transition period, so I really have to get my ducks in a row and get cracking

(it's a specialized Roubaix frame from ca. 2007, btw. Very sharp looking in the stand with no wheels or nuttin' on it)

I should note that I HAVE finished building it and the rain kept me off it today - that and I had to get the LBS to fix the seat clamp. Apparently the dude who sold it to me lost the bolt and it's some special specialized thing. The LBS figured out a solution though, pretty happy about that, and they got me the right stem cap for a carbon steerer.

So now that I have internet back at home, I'll get a built-up pic posted some time tomorrow.

Hey, I was working something like 6 am to midnight lst week... and the frame was sitting in the stand the whole time just mocking me.

Yeah, I dig the paint job - it fades to clear-coat in the middle so you can see the carbon layup. Tomorrow is the maiden voyage (rode it up and down the street with the dog the other day but that doesn't count)

Oh that's a bummer! When I got my new frame, the shop couldn't find the right head tube bearing. I only needed the lower bearing ($15) but they disagreed. They ordered a new set ($69), received it then it was the wrong one. :mad:

Turns out , I only needed the lower bearing. They finally got it from Trek after another few days.......($15):eek:

But for nearly 2 weeks, the frame sat there mocking me!

Beanz - Did they replace the fork with your warranty as well? Is that one of those semi-integrated headsets? Or full on integrated?

Anyway, here's the 98% finished product - I say 98% because I intend to ride it for a month or two as is and then go get fitted, so I left the fork uncut and put some spacers under the cap. I know I need to lower the handlebars, but it sure is comfy where they are now. :) I'll probably change out the seat at some point too - that one is getting long in the tooth. Additional possible upgrades include a compact crank whenever I find one for less than a million dollars.

I squeezed in a little 11 miler last night for the initial shakedown cruise, had to adjust one or two minor things but so far, it seems like a really nice upgrade over my previous frame. It's very smooth over crummy roads - my last fork was actually aluminum, so you can imagine how much nicer a carbon fork feels. Hopefully that will be the end of my numb hands!

I got an integrated headset. The inside of the frame is actually machined so that the bearing seats right in, and the fork crown is machined so that the bearing fits right on without a separate bearing race.

Chris king hates integrated headsets... I found this when I was trying to figure out what my headset needed (I wasn't sure all the bits and pieces were there)

I guess you're so far out in front, investment wise, it doesn't really matter. I imagine it would be a warranty issue again if something failed. Someday I'll have to buy a new bike so I can enjoy a warranty! :)

Yeah, Chris King hates integrated cause they lose money not being able to sell their expensive headsets. I've got one on my tandem and it aint worth the large differrence in money from others I use (just my opinion). Plus if the bearings wear out I'm told you can find bearings at a bearing house. My buddy that first told me I only needed the lower bearing suggested I go there. But I went to the LBS where they wasted lots of my time. My buddy was right about everything else and said he got his bearing at a bearing house, I should have gone there.:D



But yeah, I am way ahead of the game on upgrades! :D
