Folding Bikes - Brompton 2012 folding pedal redesign

I've just stumbled upon a couple of pics which indicate that Brompton have redesigned the folding pedal:

Looks like another step towards the more organic, curved lines of CAD designed parts. Hopefully it'll weigh a little less with some areas cut away, plus the bolt appears to be an allen key fitting on the standard model.
I can't see any evidence that the bearing is replaceable, however.

Sure its a replaceable bearing, they didn't pour hot aluminum around it,:rolleyes:
the bearing is pressed in, you just have to make an arbor press ,
and a few jigs to press it out again ..
A straight forward shop practice.

the allen key fixing brought out in steel in the same way they did
in the Ti Version is a good thing..

Ground down the edge of a 24mm socket, so I'm OK with my old gear.

1 "flaw" i found on using the brompton folding pedals is if first fold the pedals and then fold the bike, the pedals can hit the chainstay and damage the paint.

I mistakely did this and wondered why i could not get it to fold.

brompton should design a stop to prevent the pedal from folding back too far as to prevent paint damage from the pedal hitting the frame when bike and pedal fully folded.

On the current Bromptons, there is a bump on the left crank arm which prevents the pedal from folding too far.

What happened to Toango happened to me, which led me to several misguided attempts to DIY paint my own bike; culminating in me paying a someone to re-powder paint my bike at a not-cheap price.

So, if I want to idiot-proof this from happening again (besides selling the bike, lol), do I replace the crank arm only, pedal only, or both?

Just the LH crank.

How about a bit more simple fix rather than buying a whole new LH crank. I use a old clean preferably thick sock to protect both my own older Brompton's chainstay paint, slipping it on when I fold the pedal up. Try it. It works well especially if you are shipping the bike somewhere. Using socks as cushions is not just for Bromptons. The old sock idea works well even with other collapsed bikes.

seem to be, careful folding does not make paint chips.

tape and old inner tube, over potential hits,
is always able to be done..

I've got the old cranks without protruding stop thingy and have just switched to some Ultegra cranks anyway. I don't seem to have this problem; it only happens if you fold in the wrong order, and most of my frame is covered in helicopter tape so it wouldn't scratch if it were to happen.

Yeah, it only happens if you fold the pedal before swinging the rear triangle under, while the folding pedal is in the 3:00 to 9:00 position.

Re: OP - is that pedal different from the 2011 pedal? It looks about the same to me.

new pedal core plug appears to be broached straight thru.

+1! protects so many different parts, and there's often endless supply of orphaned socks around the house! :thumb:

I was told by Brompton the new pedal is broader and reinforced, so slightly heavier. The allen socket bolt and washer are lighter so overall weight remains around the same. Weight weenies can stick with the old pedal but buy the new bolt.

Real weight weenies use non folding pedals , with More Titanium.
