Mountain Biking - Should i but this bike??? some questions also

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello!
I'm thinking about buying this bike http://202.21.128.4/photoserver/48/7037148_full.jpg
Do you think this would be a good bike for doing mountain bike trails or is it a downhill bike???
I'm going to have a look tomorrow but all feedback is welcome.
Cheers

First off you will never get an answer quickly.
Secondly, avoid that bike like the plague.

I don't have that much money dude! I went to the shop and they are way over priced. That bike is cheap and a good option. any good for trails?

listen nigs. If you want advice, shoot for it. If you already have a biased opinion, asking for advice wont do a thing. The bike is cheap, cheap in $$ and quality, and ISNT a good option. The only thing its good for is looking cool to little kids, its not even a good commuter for god sakes. If you dont have that much money, there is something called saving....try it sometime kid.

Already said by both of us, avoid it, save your money man.... buy a better bike, or a different second hand bike
first things you want, you want single crown fork...
And only suspension on the front (hardtail)

12-20-04, 01:26 PM
Can assure you that it looks like it is.
BUT....
I can also assure you that it wasn't designed for trails at all.

Stay away from cheap dual suspension bikes. Put you money towards a decent hardtail bike instead, like the Specialized Hardrock that Cornish suggested. Buying a cheap full suspension bike is virtually throwing money down the drain. It'll be heavy, and possibly weak to boot. It might be cheap, but I doubt it's really a good option. If you can't afford something like a Specialized Hardrock, then save your money for a bit longer until you can.
What sort of store is this bike at? Bike shop? Multi-sport store? Department store? Toy shop???? Do you have any info on it other than a picture?

Dude, he's not negative. That is not a decent bike. If you want advice, accept it. If not, don't ask. If you're gonna treat us like this, get out, you're wasting bandwidth. It's too valuable for some people like you.

First, did you read this?? http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=56148 Most of these are realy good suggestions.
second, they all have a point. Dont ask for an honest opinion unless you realy want one.
Now that aside, I've been riding 18 years and have never /needed/ a FS frame. sure, it would have been nice but I got a much better bike for the money by buying a hardtail. That particular bike is poorly made, heavy, and almost completely unsuitable for ANY offroad trail. Honestly, your looking to get hurt on one of those. At best, you'll ride it, hate it, and come away with the idea that riding sucks.
I realy advise you to either look for a used bike, online, in the classifieds, or on the websites of local clubs and organizations. Theres no shame in riding a used bike, especially when you can fly past people riding the type of bike you're showing above on a decent used one.
Relax, Research, then go Ride as many bikes as you can at your local shop to get an idea of the diferences

Its a dual suspension commuter. Not meant for much more than a fully groomed trail with the odd curb on it.

Did you guys read that dirt rag article where the guys bought two of those POS bikes and beat the F$%^ out of them HAHAHAHAHAHA
is that the same artical where he haggles all the k mart people and ask questions he knew the answers to, and get totally obscure answers?

12-20-04, 04:14 PM
Yes, I'm sure most of us here have read that article. It's rather amusing. I also find it amusing that the kid comes in here looking for us to tell him that the bike he's looking at is a great deal and he should snap it up in a heartbeat. Then when everyone disagrees with his opinion that it's a great bike, he decides that we suck and runs away crying. Kids... can't live with 'em, can't turn their face to hamburger with a pump-action 12-gauge and get away with it.
10 bucks says he had already bid on it when he started this tread.

and then when he was told that it was crap and not worth whatever he paid for it... he got all miffed about it.. lol
I read that article on the net, actually the cheaper bike was put together better than the more expensive one.

Subbie we've been through this before. You can do better

You cant, you simply cant get full suspensions for a low price (under 300 which im pretty sure the bike is) without lacking in quality. Buy a used hardtail! Buy a trek, dont get that, they are far more trouble than its worth, once you take it onto the trail your going to find you will be maintaining it for than you ride it. Trust me i learned that the hard way

I GUARANTEE that it has a sticker that states the following:
"Warning! This bike is not deisigned for off road use, jumping, stunts, or competition."
It looks all off road stuff to most people. But actually, it looks like crap. At Costco, i saw a "Motiv" bike that had a fork with short boots from the "seals" i guess you could call them that try to imitate a real fork. It also had gothic letters that made it look all fancy too. I bottomed out the shocks by doing a bunny hop. That is just sad.
Look, save your money and get a better bike, such as a Hardrock. It will last you a long time and your skill will grow more than an X-mart bike.
Specialized Hardrocks can be found for around $500 if you look for a 2004 model. Kona makes really nice bikes for the money too. Bikes that you find at a bike-specific shop can be upgraded ALOT more than x-mart bikes. You wont be sorry if you buy a better bike.

The shop should have set up the positions of the bars, shifters, levers, and seat for you. It really makes a big difference. As for upgrades, My first was new brakes, then a nice fork, and my next upgrade will probaby a drivetrain. Have fun!
