Or her? That childhood teddy bear? Or stuffed animal? The one that made all of your fears go away, absorbed all of your tears, listened to your crying and still smiled for you?

What ever happened to it?

Teddy bear. I could not sleep without it. I grew up and started taking it with me to motels. Guess something was more interesting than the teddy bear because one night I forgot it on a motel. Oh well.

You know that scene in Red Dragon where the crazy guy eats the painting? sort of like that. I'm not afraid anymore. :D

I don't recall ever having a stuffed toy as a child that served this role...

My nephew is now 30 and still has the stuffed teddy bear I gave him on his first Christmas and the little ragged bear named "Jingles" watches over his office from a place of honour.

Remember when he was two and had to spend some time in the hospital for tests and the only thing that calmed him down was his teddy bear.

My youngest daughter loves Sandy, her teddy bear with the button eyes and surgical scars after she lost a fight with a big dog... my daughter takes her everywhere and I pity anyone that forgets Sandy.

When I was 2, I need surgery to remove a growth. I was given a small stuffed elephant. There is a picture of me, in my scrubs, with tubes coming out of my arms, a small grey elephant in my lap, and a smile on my face.

My kids now have my little elephant. I love my children.

Teddy, he's in a trunk with my other stuffed animals, Morgan the dog, Tony the tiger and Penguin the penguin. Ensign, my Jerry Mahoney ventriloquist doll is long gone and very missed.

I called him Little Bear, because I had another bear that was larger. Little Bear was given to me by my uncle on the day I was born (I don't remember that of course) and he had once been Paddington but I don't recall him ever having the proper clothes and hat. At some point he started leaking the little plastic beads he was filled with, and after several unsuccessful attempts to sew up his feet, my mom finally fashion dark brown socks which were sewed in place. This fixed the problem. The thing about Little Bear was that he wasn't a toy I cuddled with, or turned to when I was scared or sad. I don't remember doing that with any of my stuffed animals. In fact I rarely played with Little Bear at all, but he was my most prized toy. I made him sacred for some reason. My mom has him in a trunk in her attic.

With her baby sitter... Maggie would never hurt a stuffy and would protect them against everyone except me and my daughter who did not mind leaving her with such a protective little mom.

No stuffed toys but I had a security blanket. Still have it folded up and stored in the linen closet.

After spending a few decades in my Grandmother's cedar chest, my old 1955 vintage Panda Teddy Bear has spent the last couple decades upstairs sitting in a old peach basket. I stop by and look at him every few years. Just looked at him about 10 days ago. He's doing fine. Maybe better than me.

Was never attached to my bear like that, but I still have him. He's just in the other room.

I always remember a huge (to me at age two) turtle that I remember talking to, laying on, and having with me at all time. We moved from a bad area in Philly to a then nicer area and my parents forgot my turtle. I remember crying my eyes out for what seemed like days. I also remember asking my mom over and over to go back and get him but my dad refused. Just before my mom died I told her how I vividly remembered this happening and she said,"How the hell do you remember that! You were only two years old when that happened?!" Thats not even the weird thing! Weird thing is sometimes when I'm feeling kinda sad and lonely I remember that darn turtle! and Im gonna be 47 come April! Im not afriad to say I still miss 'em. =0(

So what about you Siu? What was your little buddy when you was a little Siu?

I was a blanket man myself.

Although I do recall the day me Ma gave my teddy bear away because 'that boy needed it more than you'. I suppose she was right, but it was long before I was ready for that kind of selflessness.

No stuffed animals for me. Toy cars were the thing. Still have my red firetruck from about age four. Think it was the first. Being a very logical tyke, I thought it kinda lame. A rubber firetruck would burn in a fire, therefore it was an impostor. The Tonkas and Matchboxes were metal like real cars and trucks.

Checked on the prices of old Hot Wheels, Matchboxes, and Tonka trucks. Turns out I knew more about investing as a kiddie than as an adult. All my surviving toys are in PWH condition- Played With Hard.

I shudder to think what some stranger is doing to your teddy bear now.

Meh. Toys are meant to be played with. In my not at all humble opinion, there are few things sadder than an old toy in good condition. No matter what monetary value it might have.

had a panda bear i just loved and I don;t know where it is now. Bear #2 was a koala bear, of actual koala fur, which is kinda neat and kinda creepy, which i tucked into my nephew's cradle one day and ownership transferred right then right there. Torsten loooooves his bear.

Koalas are protected. Now I could believe Possum fur - they are considered vermin in New Zealand and the fur is really nice.

We were very poor growing up and I remember that for Easter my mom had given me a giant bunny rabbit (well, to a 3 year old it was HUGE) with long long ears that I really really wanted. She could never afford extras like that so when she got it, it was very special. I used to sleep with her all of the time. She was too big for me to hold with one arm so I dragged it around by the ears. Eventually she started to wear out from all of that dragging and my mom would try to sew up the worn spots. One day when we had to go to a fancy dinner, I had to leave her home. I remember when mom opened the door there were cloth pieces all over the living room floor. Somehow the dog got into the house from the garage... :(

My mom had made teddy bears for my sister and I. My teddy bear fell apart. My sister still has hers. One day (maybe my 7th or 8th) birthday, my dad anounced that I was now a man and presented me with a nice hunting knife. That was my best teddy bear.

I do not remember mine, but I clearly remember my older brothers stuffed monkey. He had a hard plastic face and hard plastics hands and feet. One of which held a bananana that could be inserted into the monkeys mouth. This was in teh mid to late 60s.

I had a teddy bear from when I was 2, gave it to my daughter when she was about the same age. She loved it. It was all threadbare, had mismatched buttons for eyes. It got lost somewhere in between moving. I miss it.

We had a Pooh and a Piglet as a kid, and I enjoyed them, but they weren't as special as some of the ones described here.

But my son had a slew of stuffed animals which lived on his bed for many years - I'm sure his Mom still has some of them. They were collectively referred to as "The Friends," and many times at bedtime he would want to hear a story about them. So I would have to be a lesser version of A.A. Milne and hatch a new story about Simba and Puppy and the others on the fly. Sometime he would ask for a story I had told before - since I was winging it when I told them, this was not easy. His favorite (and the only one I still more or less remeber) was how Simba had gone exploring down the hall and found a monster, and how he had made the others come see, too, only to be told (after much building up of drama, of course) but the very much wiser Puppy that it wasn't a monster, it was just the furnace.

When I went off for a bike tour around Provence (a 40th birthday present from my ex), my son was seven. I brought Puppy and Simba along, and they rode around Provence with me, strapped to the bike's rear rack. Still have photos of them on the bike, next to a village fountain, and in a Paris hotel room.

Fun memories.

I still have my teddy bear, although my black lab Murphy had the honor of the role of my best friend. I cannot count how many times she made me feel better. Put her down in July 2011 :(. Still miss her, every day, probably always will.

Mine is Wabbit. He's in a drawer in my apartment here, waiting to launch his next political move:
