I just sold my lemond road bike, and NEED (like when you need a woman) a SS mountain bike. As cold as it is in NYC i'll be returning to work as a messenger next week after a couple months off the bike.

i am now both fat and broke, so i need something cheap, and i don't care how ugly it is as long as...

-it's steel
-it works, and doesn't need much to pedal away on
-and it's a single speed or easily convertible (horizontal dropouts)

i'm not a mechanical guy (one of several reasons i want a single speed), so a complete bike would be good.
if you've got something, or know somebody who does, let me know ASAP.

anything from a $50 beater to something cool you'll let go for $300 max including shipping.

I have a specialized stumpjumer for sale for $300. Not steel and non-horiz dropouts but it works very well as an urban commuter. Rigid with a 44x16 gearing. Surly rear hub . No tensioner used for this gearing but might be needed for other gears. Can be run as a fixie, I've done it. She is ugly enough not to get noticed but nice enough to stand up to abuse. PM me if you want pics and further description.
