Planning on doing some charity rides next year and I'm beginning to worry that I'll get shafted for only having one brake on my fixie.

I've been on lots of charity rides that explicitly required at least one functional brake, but never any that required more than that. Most of them were more concerned with helmet wearing and that the bikes were mechanically sound.

why doesnt the ability to stop with out an "official brake" enough?

I did the Ride for the Roses on my fixie - brakeless of course.

Nothing but amazement from others.

if you are worried you should check with the organizers first. if you want to keep your cards close to your chest, say something like "may i see a list of your equipment-related rules, please?"

i've done a couple ms150's brakeless... mosy charity rides i've done..they dont even look at your bike..

I saw plenty of fixies at Midnight madness and there were no qualms about it. It was the once a year riders that made things scary. You'd need full on football gear (pads and all that) to be safe amongst those fools.

I've heard of Capitol Hill cops giving messengers tickets for it, though.

One of my knees is gone so my semi-sloping conversion has a handbrake now. But I rode a Spectrum track bike downtown for about 2 - 2 1/2 years without incident (no brakes no problem). I think it is a good idea to ride with a handbrake on road bike conversions because the BB is lower, and you don't get the radical evading capability of a trackbike.
