Classic & Vintage - What would be a nice frame to trade for an International?

I'm sure you guys are used to seeing posts about this International i have acquired recently, It's really too small for me so I've considered trading it to someone who would be really interested in it and could actually enjoy it. I have had a few offers so far but i'm really trying to hold on to it until the right bike comes around. I'm not looking for anything specific but something that might be around the same quality. Any idea what would be a nice trade for this frame and fork only? It is pretty average size 56.5cm ST. I've tried Frame doesn't thread but i'm not having too much luck. If nobody wants it i'm just going to build it up and try to enjoy it since i have most of the components waiting to get on this frame.

The paintjob was terrible, sprayed right over the Reynolds labels!

I'm in the process of stripping it down so who ever gets it, it is ready for some fresh auto paint or powder coat!

It helps to be patient! I was offering a bike on that thread --it was in fact my inspiration to start it-- and eventually gave up and passed the frame on to a friend. Only after that did I get an offer for a trade!

But to answer your question, anything with full 531 butted tubing (or the equivalent) would be a reasonably fair trade. If it turns out to be a French frame, then both parties may have to include stuff like BB, headset, stem, seat post, etc. Other than that, it comes down to personal taste, condition, and that kind of stuff.

Raleigh Internationals are rather overrated in my opinion. The brazing quality typically ranges from "Meh, not bad" to "Good lord, how drunk was the monkey that built this thing?". The geometry is sport touring, but the fork has no eyelets.

So what should you trade it for? Who knows. I'd just sell it outright. Some people go ga-ga for them so cash in on someone else's romantic opinion of 70s Raleighs.

Wow,I rather like internationals,they ride well perhaps not the highest quality. The internationals I have owned all had eyelets on the fork and rear triangle.

Someone locally on CL has an International on for $2500, so at least HE thinks it's a hot bike. He doesn't even say what components are on it, and in the pic, the bike is almost totally disassembled. The frame DOES look nice, but $2500?

Probably the guy's wife told him to sell some of his junk OR ELSE...he had 5 different bikes, all in one CL listing, all priced on the high side! No details, just a snapshot of each and a price.

I'd think the Moto nice, but a step down. Holdsworth could be killer, who knows, depends what it is. Super Sport I wouldn't think in the same league as an International.

If you can wait and be patient, something will turn up.

I rate Internationals about the same as PX-10's: because they were so popular back in the 1970's they are very well-known, and that seems to inflate their their value even though they're relatively common. Maybe the fact that your frame has the Capella lugs rather than the more common and "classic" Nervex will lower its value for some folks, but I really like them myself. However, the seat lug brazing is quite sloppy and the lack of fork eyelets is a bummer (I think the drunken monkey took the forkends out of the Professional box that day). Also the fact that it no longer has the original finish will limit its value.

I think all the offers you got were fair. I would have offered more than $150 if not for the eyelets thing. I'd say a Grand Record is a pretty even trade: both are good-looking, classic mass-produced frames with Reynolds-Campagnolo construction and cool lugs, and both have a reputation as good riders. But Motobecanes have much cleaner brazing, and if the finish is in decent condition I would think you're getting the better deal on that one. A Holdsworth is probably also a good trade, I don't think they made any crappy bikes. The 70's Super Sport's are a lower level but if it's a complete bike that would compensate. But if none of those are what you looking for, just keep it out there until something else comes along.

I kind of like the metallic orange paint on that. From the pictures, the paintjob doesn't look too bad to me (other than the weird case of painting over the 531 decal). If it fit, I probably would've just gotten a replacement 531 decal to put on top of the covered one. :)

Edit: Also, regarding the trade, I'd keep in mind that a non-original paint job (or a non-paint-job if it has been sanded down after the photos) would bring the value down significantly and that probably should be reflected in what you're looking to trade for.

The Grand Record seems like an equivalent quality frame if you want to deal with french parts (and possibly a swiss bottom bracket). The Holdsworth could be awesome.
