Fixed Gear Freestyle - New and looking for advice on Fixed Gear bicycles!!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've recently began cycling to get fitter but am enjoying it very thoroughly and want to upgrade. I ride PRIMARILY on the roads/paths so off-roading isnt of huge improtance. But if I can get a bike that could facilitate that if the occasion came then great!
I'm looking for a fixed gear (the ones where you HAVE to pedal and if you pedal backwards you break/go backwards)
Problem is I'm also looking for a bike that as well as being fixed gear, is BMX-like so I can do tricks, etc but also high/comfortable enough to cruise sitting down without any problems..
These are the sort of bikes I'm interested in height and shape wise, just an FYI:

http://bmxcruiser.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Kuwahara-Laserlite-Pro-BMX-Cruiser-241.jpg
But I'm not sure if you can get bikes like this fixed gear?
Sorry for the essay, but I would appreciate any advice you guys can give!
Thanks!

Get something like that. Not a fixed hybrid lol.
And start frequenting Pedal Consumption as well as Prolly is not Probably. Thames and Watson have been all over FGFS as of late.

Oh and I'm also assuming I'd want 24" or 26". 20" would be too umcomfrotable for cruising.
Yeah, more impractical than anything.
Good luck. Just google "fixed gear freestyle" and you'll find plenty of stuff, as well as videos that will show you the stuff you will be doing.
I wish I was coordinated to freestyle anything, but nope. I'm just awkward enough to ride.

What those guys said. You're looking for Fixed Gear Free Style stuff, I have nothing else to contribute.
Your best bet is a fixed gear freestyle bike, which as a group here we do not know too much about. But the Trick Track forum has many good dudes that know their stuff. Check out there.

Thanks for all the replies folks, I really appreciate the help.
I've looked at freestyle fixed gear but I'm not keen on the high seat / level seat/handlebars..

Something this shape seems more my style, but I dont know if things like these come in fixed gear.
And obiously not the McDonalds colours.

Then just slam the seat? You're kinda looking for something doesn't exist.

I think you'd have a hell of a time pedaling a bike like the ones you posted at anything above walking speeds, with the seat that low. Standing up and riding fixed gear for any significant length kind of sucks, imo.

I see. I wasnt sure if it did or not!
I just found this video, and the bikes at 0:24 and 0:42 are almost exactly the shape I'm looking for. If anyone could tell me the type of bike I'd be appreciative!

I don't know, man. You could always get one of the bikes you listed above, and get a rear wheel with a fixed gear hub, and then put a cog and lockring on it. As far as I know though, you're looking for something that doesn't exist, as mentioned above.

The saddles are too low on those BMX bikes for FG riding.
At this point you are asking for two different things.
A bike that can be used for traveling any distance, but can still be used for some tricks will not look anything like the style you are going for.
You have a few options: get a bike that is the style you want but it wont be practical for the ride you want. Get a bike for the ride you want, but it wont be that style, or get both.

I mentioned that potentially being an issue in an earlier post. I've never done it, so I couldn't say definitively, but even if it were possible, it would suck horribly to ride fixed with a saddle that low.

OK guys I think I'm just gonna have to forget about the BMX style, but a bike in this vide at 1:32 shows a good shape that I would be happy with but is also fixed gear. Any idea what type of bike it is?

Are all 3 of those bikes fixed? And definately not compete! I'm just biking 2-4 hours everyday for fitness. Well in the beginning it was for fitness, but the more I do it, it's becoming more and more for enjoyment.
The thrasher and sledgehammer look like bikes I could see myself with, I'm just not sure whether they are fixed! I think the Thrasher is...

I'm fairly certain they're all intended for FGFS, but you can ride them fixed or with a freewheel.
I should note that it sounds like you want a complete bike, versus one in which you would buy all the components and build it up yourself.
(not compete, lol)
I'm really taking some shots in the dark here, but this looks like up your alley also:

Oh, ha, my mistake!
That bicycle you posted is perfect. It looks exactly how I want it to and does exactly what i want. Only downfall is, it seems a tad pricey for someone who is currently unemployed!
Do you have any other ideas or suggestions?

With those Volumes, since you want fixed, you'll want to look at the Thrasher. Whats your budget? You could always go for a PK Ripper too. That one seems to be popular.

Out of curiosity, are there any bikes like the http://store.citygrounds.com/store/product/12933/2012-Specialized-P.Fix-Trick-Bike/ that are single speed? That you know of? :)

I'm just thinking now if I cant get exactly what I want in fixed I'd be happy with single speed I think. If you take a look at the quick link above that is almost the perfect bike for me. Is there any sort in single speed?

That Specialized is singlespeed. It has a 10t cassette driver in place of a FW, which is why the gearing is so small.

And are you sure its single speed not fixed gear?

If you got a flip-flop hub, its as easy as threading a freewheel on there. Otherwise, get a new wheel or hub and go ham, dude.
Run a brake unless you TedShred on the reg.

Thanks for the reply. I do, however, have no idea what ham or ted shred is :p
But I think what your'e saying is that it IS generally simple to turn a fixie into a single speed?

The specialized P. Fix that you posted comes with a flip flop hub so you can convert it to fixed very easily. It comes stock as a single speed so to convert it to fixed you just have to turn the wheel around and put a fixed cog and lockring on it

I dont mean to derail the thread too much, but do you think these sort of bikes (single speed) would be too unfomfortable to cruise on? Even with the seat risen?

The p.fix is not flip flop. They use their own system where you bolt the driver in place if you want to go fixed, and either loosen or take out the fixed bolts to let it coast. **** is sweeeeeet
EDIT: From the P. Fix specs "Rear hub: convertible fixed/freewheel cog driver cassette, 4x sealed cartridge bearing, CNCd 10t cog driver, hollow 14mm Cr-Mo axle, 23mm contact, 17mm axle nuts, 36h"

That specialized is actually the p. fix model. Yes, its intended to be ridden fixed.
But its sold with a 10t driver and a 28t sprocket. Not super cheap to just give up and replace.
EDIT: I missed MincedFeets post, and I missed that in the specs about the convertible thing on the cassette. But I personally wouldn't want to pin that thing and have it fail. That would be scary.

op...you'd be better off putting that p-fix on hold along with forgetting all the bad info you have gotten in this thread.
your 1st pics were bmx (maybe bmx cruisers?) & the ones you just posted are dirt jumpers. you obviously like that sloping toptube with a low, angled-back seat look but it doesn't work so good for fixed gear, or for riding any distance unless you have great legs & can handle standing on your pedals almost all the time.
you need to take a time-out & decide what it is you really want in a bike
have fun & good luck...

Those first pics were cruisers, correct. But once people were posting pictures of fgfs bikes, he said thats what he was looking for. And in the video he posted, he stated times when people were riding fgfs bikes. I think its safe to say thats what he's been looking for.

Most of the fixed gear freestyle bikes you want are usually sold frame only. That picture of Ed Wonka is a GRIME G.O.A.T. The specialized p fix is the best bike for tricking if your into the 26" wheels. That bike is solid as ****. Also check out volume thrasher completes and the Subrosa completes. This is the wrong place to ask stuff about fgfs go over to tricktrack.org and ask questions.

I think now ive come to the conclusion I AM looking for a fgfs LOOKING bike, but a single speed would be more versatile and suited to me.
So basically a single speed fgfs-looking bicycle. The Spec P.Fix is the only one I have come across thus far.

So basically a single speed fgfs-looking bicycle. The Spec P.Fix is the only one I have come across thus far. On all of those bikes you can put a flip flop hub on them and run either fixed gear or single speed. The thing you want to look for is a bike that has brake mounts so you can use a front and back brake if your running single speed. Volume thrasher completes come with a free wheel so you can coast but no breaks. The grime goat isn't drilled for breaks. I ride a SE us versus them frame and it's drilled for front and back brakes but I ride it fixed so i'm brakeless. Most of the good fgfs frames your going to have to buy the frame then build it up yourself there's not many fgfs bikes that come complete. Just find a frame you like make sure its drilled for brakes and get a wheelset with a flip flop hub and some brakes.

The Volume Vandal looks perfect. Could that be riden single speed with a flip flop hub?
I think I'll have to do some research as I have no idea were to start when building my own bike!
