Part of my childhood. Damn.

Mine too, and I was born in 79. I had a Monkees tape when I was a kid and I listened to it all the time. "Daydream Believer" was my favorite.

I'm sorry to see him go. The Monkees were fun and their later, less commercially successful, stuff was actually pretty good.

Reading his obituary, I never knew he used to be a jockey in England before he came to the U.S.

I was a member of The Monkees Fan Club. I'm pretty sure I still have "The Monkees", "More of the Monkees" and "Headquarters" albums stashed somewhere. When I first joined BF, I thought member "Bob Dopolina" was a play on the Monkees' song "Zilch", where part of of the lyrics refer to "Mister Dobalina/Mister Bob Dobalina".

RIP Davey.

Daydream Believer was my favorite as well although I also liked their version of I'm not your stepping stone

All English men must serve as jockeys before emigrating to the colonies. Obscure fact, but true none the less. Or at least it should be. The Monkees were a big player in my childhood as well. I want their GTO.

The group always fascinated me a bit in how it developed. Shame to see one of them pass on.

I got to play with one of their studio musicians once; he didn't talk much about the experience. I'd love to go back and pick that guy's brain again just for some stories.

I know kid.
This stuff and Donnie+Marie Osmond were the only TV rock show series we had. This created a lot of serial killers in the early 70's.

It was a "short" lifespan for Davey:)

Mike was the only actual musician of the bunch. Also, in holding out from the reunions, showed that he really was the sensible one too.

Lets face it.
The Monkeys were a made for TV band to do some network sitcoms.

David Bowie's last name is really Jones. His first stage name was Davie (Davy) Jones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bowie#1962.E2.80.9368:_the_Konrads_to_the_Riot_Squad). Faced with confusion with Davy Jones of the Monkees, he adopted Bowie, after the Bowie knife, as his last name.

Part of my childhood. Damn.

Indeed, part of mine as well. Most people know that the group was put together for a TV sitcom, and the goofy antics attracted young males and females alike. Many of their songs, such as their cover of "Pleasant Valley Sunday", were actually quite good.

I'm not sure, but I think after the show was cancelled, the time slot was taken by Rowan and Martin's Laugh In.

I'm 33 and I'm a monkees fan, have been since watching reruns when I was a kid. I was lucky enough to see them in concert minus Mike Nesmith in Las Vegas in the mid 90's. I still enjoy listening to their albums.

Rather, the older generation-formerly known collectively as "We're the young generation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPR06pB_1SA&feature=fvst)" dubbed by the Monkees themselves in their memorable theme song-now mourns the passing of another part of our youth. Even if it is a pre-fab one.

If I remember correctly, Peter Tork was also a musician first, actor second. The Monkees where created for the TV show, two actors that could sing, Jones and Dolenz, and two musicians that could act, Tork and Nesmith. The terms sing and act are used losely.
Never missed the show, I had one of the double breasted shirts that they wore.

I wonder if Fox News is planning the same treatment for Davy Jones as they gave to Whitney Huston, oh, wait.....he is white, so I guess not.

As I was out of town and away from all internet and television sources yesterday, I just found out about this.
I will put the Monkees Greatest Hits in the cd player in the jeep on the way home. A huge part of my childhood is now gone. :(

He was a tiny man, as I recall from watching the TV show in re-runs as a youth. So it's not so surprising that he'd be a jockey.

Will he be buried in his own locker...?

I used to like those bikes they rode around during the intro to the show -- looked like unicycles with a skate trucks... Always wanted one, never got one.

I guess I'm a bit more sad about it than I would have expected. I was just a kid when their show was on, but I liked to watch it. And their albums, 'borrowed' from my older sisters, got a lot of play on my cheap little record player.

Also, I respect the Monkees a bit more than a lot of my music connoisseur contemporaries. I would place them, more or less, with the lower tier of the british invasion types. Had they been a bit more creative themselves I might rate them higher. But their best stuff was written by people like Carole King and Neil Diamond. The Mike Nesmith and Boyce & Hart material was pretty ordinary. But it's at least as good as the stuff from acts like Peter & Gordon or Herman's Hermits.

I think the three are, or soon were to be, on tour. It's a pity for Peter Tork and Mickey Dolenz (a very witty, funny guy, by the way) I doubt if they were getting rich, but it might have been a nice way to make a living. But I suppose that's over with.

I've also gotten the feeling that there's bad blood between Mike Nesmith and the other three, Davy in particular.

I always wanted to ride a bicycle down the beach and right into the water the way they did in the intro. That looked fun. But I never had the guts to dip my bike into salt-water that way.

I still remember my father taking me to Arlan's department store in Fall River, Mass for an album. The album dept. was just inside the side door. I got something by The Monkees for my first album. A few years later, Arlan's burned down in a spectacular fire. Made the news. Today there is a Town Fair Tire on that corner. Kind of a rambling post huh? 66 is pretty young. Sad.
