Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Hub/Rim question...

I am considering purchasing a wheel on ebay. The rim is a Weinmann Phoenix Double walled rim and the hub is Sovos/Quando fixed/free. Has anyone heard anything on the merits, or lack thereof, of this hub/rim?

Yeah, from what I've heard about those I'd be more likely to trust my suicide setup.

toilets. those hubs just have crappy bearings and races. your bumbike setup is by far crappier.

you get what you pay for. if you want cheap and unsealed, suzue basics would be better... if you get some suzues replace the bearing immediately with nice ones. it'll make a world of difference.

if you want an inexpensive and reliable hub, i would go with something sealed: surly, van dessel, iro/nyc bikes/precision... check out that thread about inexpensive wheels. there are some useful links in there for pre-made rear wheels with sealed hubs.

I found a 27" mavic MA-2 off of a donated bike in the shop where I volunteer. I was going to relace to a smooth old campy hub- sound like a decent combination? Are there any high quality 27" rims on the market these days?
