I get asked this a lot. I've thought about it for a while and I just can't really come up with anything.

Thats not going to happen. Whatever life is out there will not allow us to spread the human disease.

We're it. We're the tool users and the progenitors. If one day our children look at the stars and see the empires of angles and demons it will be because we put them there.

In four billion years of life on this planet only one species ever wrote a book.
There may be other life out there, but spacefaring civilizations--no, those are truly rare.

Well the thing is, I can say I care about something but in the end I really don't. For example, I can say I care about music, bikes, and this and that. But in the end, I really don't, I could honestly careless if I didn't have those things. Every idea I come up with ends up the same way

I need you to define "care about"....are we talking simple concern? are we talking intent devotion to? Something I'd kill to protect?

Either or.

hmmm....I care about my bikes in that I take care of them.
I care about my job and my career in that I put a lot of effort into them.
I care about my friends and family in that I'd kill someone to protect them.

You don't have to Care, with a capital C, about anything.

Since nobody knows why we're here in the first place, nobody knows whether a person really needs to have a cause, or a passion, in order to be a "whole" person, a "good" person, etc.

It's all a matter of how you feel and what you believe. If you're OK with not caring about Some Big Thing, then it's OK to not care about some big thing.

Me? I think the greatest gift in the universe is not getting so wound up with caring about stuff that you can't just exist like a flower in the sunlight.

You have a good point. I wouldn't say I really believe in anything though. The only reason why I brought it up was because of some conversations with my boss. Once a week we review my work and do some chit chatting. I'm a laid back person and was asked if I cared about anything. I couldn't come up with an answer. I am currently the best worker on the team so no need to bring up that up. Just trying to get some ideas I guess.

was that book called "How to destroy your own habitat for dummys." or "How to be the only creatures on earth that kill for fun." or "We ****ed our whole planet up, my bad!"

We're here to live our lives the way we see fit. Thats it, nothing more. Its the people who want to tell you how you should live your lives that makes one think about "The meaning of life."

On the outside, I would describe myself as being similar to you Fuzzy in that I feel that I don't care about anything. I often see myself as a cold and uncaring person...and maybe I am.

I do have a great concern for the welfare of my family (brother, sister and mother), I care about my neighbors that live on either side of me.
I have a passion (zeal?) of sorts for my city job and really feel that I give back to my community as I work. It is to my job that I apply the signature that I use on this forum. I have an intense concern for the employees that assist and work under my directions when I'm in the field. I ensure that nobody gets hurt while they are with me.
I would do almost anything for my inspection team and co-workers! Many co-workers seek me out because I have a way of watching out for trouble and we work in some of the grubbiest parts of West Dallas!
In all, I have to say that family, the people I work with and the people I meet while I work are who I care about. That and my relationship with God.
Ernest

I do think that if humanity has a purpose, it is to spread that disease we call life. We may be the second vector that can spread life between planets and the first one we can be sure of. And we've already succeeded in taking germs to the moon and probably to Mars.

We've got plenty of friends to help. The plants are depending on us, and the cockroaches, germs and rats will be finding their own ways on board.

And you never know. By the time we meet any other life, we could be quite the alpha species.

I'm very glad that I live in such a golden age of exploration. The number of planets we have discovered via the Kepler Telescope is awe inspiring. It's like the early 1400s and Prince Henry the Navigator all over again.

Heh heh. Well, why didn't you say it was a conversation with a boss?

In that case, say that what you really really care about most is the quality of your work, and the sense of accomplishment it gives you to do a great job and do it efficiently, and function as part of the team at work, but that what you also really really care about the success of the company you work for. Then laugh, and with a twinkle in your eye, say that maybe you care too much.

Picture this - you speak to a doctor today and they tell you you have a month to live.

What do you want to do with your remaining time? Who do you want to spend it with? What do you want to be doing? What do you regret not doing to that point? What/Who will you miss most?

You can't quantify and measure caring, or love. It just is what it is (or isn't).

Haha, we'd both know that is a lie. My boss knows I hate my job, I remind her weekly. I get her bonuses so she has to deal with it.

If I was on my deathbed the things I would want to do isn't something I'd say I care about. Just more of a last thrill type of ordeal. Everything is so disposable and things constantly change that I can't dedicate myself to something in that sense. But I guess that is the beauty of living for the moment, care about something one day and hate it the next.

This. Kids are priority #1.

Besides that I think that what I *want* to do and what I *can* do are different things. Balancing out dreams vs reality and trying to be happy with it, till death comes.

I knew that that was what you were speaking of. However, I don't agree with you. I think that life in general has an imperative to spread itself, and that we are just one expression of it. But we are the first trans-planetary species, and the niche that we are opening up for life is mind-boggling. :thumb:

The second amendment. You know, the one that allows us to be ABLE to fight to keep the rest? IE: the most important of all.

And, Freedom in general.

Very important.

Beer and Bikes are pretty close :)

pgoat's question simplifies it for me. If I knew I had a single month left I'd want to spend it with my family and a small number of my best friends. I'd also probably play my guitar a lot before making sure it goes to a good home :D

I've usually found the first amendment more important in the fight to keep things. In the past little while it's gotten so that if I'm not writing my representatives on a weekly basis urging them to not vote for this bill or that, that I wondering what will be next.

Of course it may all be in vain. Half the time, I find out that my congressman is helping to sponsor the bills I find most vile.

yeah, that's about right.
25% would be about 6 hours a day.

8 hours of sleep.
8 hours of work.
2 hours to eat/drink and be merry.....then rage like hell for the remainder. ;)
