Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - 1/8" drivetrains - what's your setup?

I managed to find a 130mm bcd chainring in 1/8 that fits on my 'road' cranks (Truvativ); it took some hunting. Looking at replacement cranksets with a bcd more amenable to 1/8 chainrings, ie. 144bcd, everything seems really expensive; 'track cranksets' seem to run $200+.

Those of you that run 1/8" drivetrains: what kind of cranksets do you use and where'd you dig 'em up?

I run a Campagnolo Strada crankset/chainring, Izumi 1/8" chain, and Soma cog on both of my bikes.

The Campy strada crankset is similar to the pista crankset, except that the cranks are a bit longer (170mm). I got a set off ebay for $90, but I know that American Cyclery sells them for $200 with chainring. I think there are a few sets on ebay right now....

One day, I'll pick up a TA Alize crankset, - $155 from BikeWorks. Beautiful.

i have regular campagnolo chorus cranks with a miche track chainring. the cranks
came with the road frame I bought on ebay.

For track I run Sugino 75 cranks, Sugino Zen rings, EAI cogs and Izumi 1/8" chains. For road use I run any crank, a really round ring, Dura Ace cogs and KMC 610 3/32" chains.

stumprofig, who makes that 1/8" 130 bcd chainring? is it nice? i've been thinking of picking up a ta alize chainring...

i'm running all of the original 1/8" drivetrain components on my 80's bianchi pista. i'm not sure of the make of the chain or cranks or chainring, but i'm guessing the cranks are ofmega. it's all 1/8". on the street i run a 1/8" campagnolo cog. on the track i run a 1/8" eai cog.

my iro has 130 bcd 7410 dura-ace cranks with a 3/32" salsa chainring, 1/8" sram pc-1 chain, 1/8" campagnolo cog. i got those cranks from a friend.

my peugeot has old sakae se road cranks with a 144 bcd. i got them off ebay. i run a 3/32" sugino chainring, 1/8" sram pc-1 chain, 1/8" eai cog.

on my steamroller, i have the miche group (cranks, chainring, cog) with a wipperman 152 chain. on the spicer i run the sugino 75 cranks, fsa chainring, dura-ace cog, and izumi chain. i've had good luck with all of it so far.

I've got Sugino 75 cranks and ring with a dura-ace cog. The chain is a cheapo bmx chain. Works for me...

70's Suntour Superbe track cranks, Sugino 75 46 tooth ring, 13 tooth Suntour cog, cheap bmx chain.

I second the TA Alize and I did get mine from Bike Works/Bike Cult. $150 is very reasonable for cranks & ring of that quality. The TA BB has been OK as well; I'm just not a fan of lockrings on both sides and would prefer a fit & forget cartridge BB. I also ended up wth Soma cogs after having used Surly and Miche...didn't like the Surlys much and although they were fine, the Miche can be had only in 15 thru 18...anyway, Soma cogs are beautiful and have been very durable.

If I had it to do all over again, I might take a look at full Campy if I could get anywhere near a reasonable price.

It's the TA Alize mentioned by others, in fact; got it from Business cycles for about 40 bucks. Mine, amazingly, was slightly out of round out of the box! I had my mechanic puzzle over it and he found the spot where it was a bit off. I lived with it, probably a very rare occurence and I hate returning stuff by mail. It seems to have gotten better after riding it for a couple thousand miles.

sugino 75 on one, old school dura ace road cranks on the other with a 44T 130/110 bcd bmx ring. you can get 'em at dan's competition, although the quality probably isn't as nice as a real track ring...and they're kinda ugly. but they work!

Sorry, Onetinsloth: what does 130/110 bcd mean? Does it accept either size ring?

it means the ring will fit on either 110 bcd cranks (a la BMX), or 130 bcd (a la road, and some funky BMX size that i've never seen).

Same chainset here: Miche Primato, with a Cyclo sprocket (Joe Brandless) and a shiny BMX chain.

a 44T 130/110 bcd bmx ring. you can get 'em at dan's competitionI use these and you can't beat them for the price. Get a lot of miles out of them, probably the best value going in a ring.

I know 1/8" is the standard track drivetrain, but is there any real disadvantage to using 3/32"? I'm guessing it has to do with durability. Oh yeah I know it affects the chainline too http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainline/#sprockets

For the time being I'd be using a road crank with just the outer ring and standard road chain. I've actually found 3/32" track cogs by surly and EAI which neither is cheap BTW. I can't believe a 3/32" EAI cog is $40.

Makes me want the 1/8" if it will last longer since these cogs are so expensive as it is.

You should pick one up soon. We talked to our TA Distributor and they are no longer making the Alize. So whatever is in stock is all that is left. We're going to try and get a couple, but from what we've been told, only specific sizes are even available now.

Just a heads-up

I used to have the D/A 7600 track cranks, ring and cog. The new bike came with a campy bb, so now I have nearly the same crank setup as Judah. I have a couple questions, I think I have the pista chainring and it is about the thickest chainring I´ve ever seen, is this the case with yours? and did you have to file down the back of the cranks, because I did or else the crank would hit the chainstay.

Wow - this an old thread. This was back when I didn't even have a track crankset. Currently I have a Sugino 75.

Sugino 171s, FSA 46t chainring (al, but beefy) dura-ace cog (16t) and lockring. BB is a cheap Shimano held in with blue loctite... Chainline is pretty dead on, mostly silent.

update: switched out the Suntour cog for an EAI 16 tooth, and put a new KMC z-chain on, since the old one was rusty and noisy.

I just put a 1/8 drivetrain together yesterday:
172.5mm Shimano FC-7600 cranks
Shimano square taper NJS BB
46t Sugino 75 chainring
Izumi chain
19t Soma cog (Starting easy, I have a 14t Dura ace in the wings)

The chainline is perfect and everything is nicely round so i can keep the chain tight and noiseless so far.
