I just got a Trek 850. Is it worth upgrading the components for it? I once had a Trek Jetta an dI loved it. It was a solid, lightweight bike. I would like to make my 850 match or even surpass the Trek Jetta. Would 26 inch wheels from a modern bike fit the 850?

as long as your bike was made in the 90's it should have 135mm rear spacing so modern wheels should work just fine.

What year is your 850??? I probably wouldn't upgrade much unless I got parts for free or almost free. Just replace parts if they break. Upgrade at that point when feasible.

But, if you're dying for new wheels, If your 850 has 7-speed cassette and if you get new wheels with 8-10 speed freehub body, you'll want to also get a 4.5mm spacer to drop on the freehub body before putting your old 7-speed cassette on.

There's an article on livestrong claiming that the 1997 Jetta Trek was basically an 850 frame, but parts were generally 930 spec (STX cranks instead of Alivio, for instance). Not sure how accurate that article is.

You can check specs of both those bikes at bikepedia.com, but I don't think they list the Jetta Trek specifically.
