With it's first magazine, does that mean fixed riding isn't a sub-culture anymore?

Yojimbo's Garage would be a good place to start!

Eh? The Olympic Games is an underground lifestyle?
Surely that should be
'the unique universe of riding a fixed-gear bike in cut-off combat pants and the suburban white kid slumming it lifestyle that surrounds it.'
Ha ha ha!! You are awesome!

oh look out some one's being cynical, isn't that awesome. maybe next he'll comment on how he's cooler than other people because he heard about a band two months before everyone else, and how now they've sold out because more than five people have heard them. Please kind sir, enlighten us more!

Though you may consider him a cynic, Ben Cousins' comment is actually very accurate. Riding or racing a fixed gear bike is by no means an underground lifestyle, especially when veiwed in the historical context of track racing and roadies training on fixed gear bikes. It is much more accurate to state, as Ben did rather pretentiously, that the underground phenomenon is urban street riding on fixies. I don't think there is much chance of that becoming mainstream, seeing as how most middle class Americans are afraid of physical activity and danger :) What is the point of trying to keep a commercialy driven "scene" underground though? Don't you think it would be better if fixed gear bikes were more widely availible? It's like saying, "I wish it was harder to find my favorite kind of food." Unless you consider riding fixies to be a fashion, and are making a statment like "I hope no one else buys a shirt like mine." I guess that would make sense.
Most people just think I'm an idiot for riding a bike in the first place. Actually it's more like: "GEEE I wish I could ride a bike that much." They still call road bikes "ten speeds" so I'm not getting any cool points for riding fixed. I think they justt assume DUI.
I have not yet seen one fixed bike in this town though they are rumored to exist.

I think in a smaller facet of life like this (i.e. - a "FIXED" magazine), it is harmless. I do like your parallel luckycat and sympathize completely. But I also remember my first punk show in 83 - I got called a poseur cuz I was new. Odd thing - I have seen more people wear a studded belt one day and throw it in the trash the next cuz it had served a fashion purpose of theirs. I do not see these people at the shows I still go to...
Rest assured, the true of heart will remain. The others will find it too hard or no longer cool at pone point. And then we can buy all their shiit on eBay.

yeah, its been sad to see a spot like, say the LES go down.
But I wish I had a just a fraction of that going on out here in the Crown! Oh, how I wish... :/

I wouldn't pay for crap like this, I live it everyday, except without glossy photos and trendy clothes.

I say the more the merrier. The more people riding bikes the better off we all are. I think most of us are scared that fixed riding will become mainstream and we'll feel less elitist and cool about ourselves. I don't have to worry, I'll always be cool...ALWAYS.
Hey hey, it's The Wrench!! Wow, we never missed ya........

dude, i grew up in LES and i've seen it "go down" steadily for the past 10 years when the first non-chinese family moved in next door to me in my building. let's not get into issues of gentrification here b/c it's just not applicable.

I don't agree at all. There is nothing "mixed" or "blessing" about Starbucks. It's just bad.
*EDIT* Yes, I'm that guy.

i use starbucks only for their bathrooms. i find them quite useful when it's late and you need to go before jumping on the train for a long ride. k-mart and barnes & noble are also good places for a quick stop off if the need should arise.

it offers employment (the only benefit in my mind) yet brings all the suck-ass yuppies jagoffs too. That is all. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm to lazy to write to trackstars, maybe later. But does anyone here know if this is going to be a published i.e. at the newstand stores magazine or a Zine?

I was there! Where were you? They gave away some awesome stuff for everyone that participated. Blankets, shirt, toothbrush, Tylenol, socks, hand towel, mirror, sketch pad, mini etcher sketch, vanilla scented candle. I needed to buy a Dank backpack at TrackStar to bring it all home. Oh the horror.
B.T.W. If anyone intends on going to Trackstar, bring tons of Cash money. They don't take Credit or Debit. (The way it should be).

all in all, if it blows up (more than it already has), I think it would be rad to pick up a hub or cog or a fixed frame at a lbs. Mail order is all fine and good, but if I strip a hub on tuesday, I'd like to be riding tuesday night, and right now, that's not possible.
