Mountain Biking - Fork Tips - 99 Marzocchi Z2 Superfly 70mm

Hi guys,

I have just sourced a set of 1999 Marzocchi Z2 Superfly forks. Some of you may recall that these were the first Bomber air fork released, and have about 70mm of travel. No disc mount tabs.

To clarify, they have the fully machined arch, bolted to the stantions, and the upper legs are bolted to the crown. 2000 Z2s are different, with the BAM cryofit arch, and no bolts in the crown.

Anyone got some upgrade tips on these forks?

Has anyone increased the travel of these?

Has anyone used a later model crown and uppers on this fork?

I am an ex mechanic, so rebuilding is not an issue (and will be done). A mate of mine runs the workshop for the largest MTB specific bikeshop here in Sydney, so spares, replacement parts are not difficult.

Good luck finding new new seals.

No problem, they use exactly the same seals as all the 1997-2005 30mm slider 'zokes.

Also Enduro make an alternative seal kit for them as well.

That's one of the best things about Marzocchi, they got (most of) it right the first time around, so they haven't changed it much!

99 don't have disc tabs? werid.

i got a 99 z2 atom bomb and it has disc tabs on it. It has been stamped with 98 so i assume it is a 99. (my 03 was stamped with 02 and my 04 was stamped with 03)

Yeah, these are the lightest forks Marzocchi made, and at that time, discs were DH only. Tabs must have been seen as extra weight.

Great fork though, but I would love to extend the travle to 80mm ..... anyone got any ideas?

I had one of these... beat me to **** on the way down winter park (XC trails). I bought another marz fork which was horrid. Now i am a Fox man.

Yeah, Fox make some nice forks. We all got really excited over here (Australia) when they started to trickle in.

But, there were a lot of quality issues to start with. Many of those who converted from RS or Zoke, switched back. I di not help that the local distributors are more concerned with shipping product than customer care.

I hear that most issues are sorted now.

Any chance your fork look like this? I think that if you can find a 97-99 Z1 you will be in luck. Those were set at 80mm if I am correct.

Nup, they are even earlier than the ones I have. Mine have the trick looking machined arch.

Are you referring to the 3 peice "M-arch" design? My 2k1 Z.4 air has that and it rocks. I think unless I'm mistaken the trickle tech of Marzo has the Z.4 air as the same model as the Z.2 you are referring to.

Not sure about the trickle down though - I know that the Z4s of the following year had a slightly different air system inside.

does ANYONE make parts for those?

Well Marzocchi still do (all the seals are the same as many of the 05 models, but I hoping to find details of upgrading/improving performance on them.

Travel is listed at 65mm, but is really 70mm, and with a smaller/tighter bottom out spring, I might get another 5mm.

Any ideas?
