Don't know if this bike is old enough to be considered C&V yet but this seemed like the most relevant forum.
So I saw this bike on my LBS's website and it seemed like a pretty nice bike for what they are asking for it. I searched around online and it seems that it is possibly from 1992 but I am not sure. It is my size and I'm considering buying it. They are closed today so I couldn't go look at it and there is not a lot of info on their site. All it says is that it is an aluminum frame, 700c wheels, and shimano components. They do have a picture though. Would you pay $300 for this?

I would definitely pick that up. Double eyelets and mid-fork rack mounts. Looks like a good touring bike.

Yes, easily worth that much if it fits you. Nice all-arounder, good for everyday commuting, touring or just riding for pleasure.

Awesome! I'm gonna go check it out as soon as I get out of class for the day.

Love those 36 spoke wheels. Run don’t walk.

I sold my ~1998 T-400 for $350 without a problem. Similar shape, but the T-600 has nicer components. Oddly enough, people on here told me it was worth maybe $200. So $300 seems reasonable - I liked my T-400 a lot, but never did any touring (it was a commuter/gravel bike), and the handling isn't that great, which is expected with a touring bike.

So I went and the bike was still there so I started browsing around the shop and while I was doing that someone else took the bike for a test ride and had them put it on hold. They said that if he didn't come back that night I could buy it, but they also informed me that the rear wheel was going to need to be replaced or rebuilt soon. I was at the shop about a half hour before they closed so I don't really think that guy was coming back, but since it already has an issue I don't think I want it.
They are selling for $500 in Seattle today I would snap that one up and get a new wheel or even a used one

I asked the employee that I talked to about replacing the wheel and he told me my best bet would be having the wheel rebuilt and he estimated $175 to rebuild it. Is that a reasonable price?
$175 to rebuild a wheel? Wow. What exactly is wrong with it?

Honestly I didn't ask. $475 seemed like a lot for a 20 year old aluminum bike so I sort of lost interest. I assumed that there is something wrong with the rim since the hub is still good. I also assumed that that estimate was for rim + spokes + labor. How much should it cost?
Its a great bike and there is no way $175 for a rear wheel is realistic. At that price I would find a used replacement which would be about $50. If you do get it, I'm sure someone on the forums will be able to help you out. Everyone here is extremely courteous to fellow C&Vers!
OK so where are you lacated I am sure you can snag a rear wheel for $50 or less

I just got a call from the bike shop letting me know someone bought the bike. I'll have to keep looking.

I just sold my Cannondale T600 in the Seattle area for $400 a couple weeks ago. Its a nice aluminum touring bike . Really fast with index shifters on the downtubes. I struggled with letting it go. I just like the ride form a steel bike better, but this bike is really nice. Good price at $300 if its good condition.

I thought you said that it was $300??:twitchy:
Did they raise the price on you? Otherwise, the bike was certainly worth $300, IMO.

$300 for the bike plus $175 for a wheel rebuild = $475.
I've been riding the same bike since I bought it new in '92. It's pushing 89k miles on it these days. I've been upgrading components as they wear out, generally with clearance items I've stock piled when the new stuff comes out. It's currently at the 9-spd Ultegra/XTR/XT level. It's been a trooper...

This reminds me of garage sales. If you see something you want, grab it while you think.
Or someone else will pick it up as you ponder your stategy.
