I GOT to thinking i wonder if everyone in the group found a flat 10 mile TT they could do. wind would be a variable that is hard to control but..in affect we could have a virtual time trial amongst us all? any ideas?

Hi Clydes,

My brother just told me about the following Strava code:

1monthtrialea

Enter the code and it gives you 1 month free acces to the premium tools like Analysis and Suffer Score. No strings or credit card needed. i just applied the code and it works great!

Thanks it worked for me too.

Confirmed with my Edge 305. Now If I could transfer all my rides already in Garmin Connect...

You can, but it takes a little work.
Go to your Connect home page.
Click on the Activities tab
Click on a ride you want to upload to strava
Once that page loads,
Click on Export
Export as a TCX or GPX file

Go to Strava and click Upload, but make sure your Garmin Unit is not plugged into the computer
Click on Upload a file on your computer
Browse to select file
Upload
Done

I did this with about 200 files, one at a time from Garmin Connect.
It took me a whole evening.

Thanks for setting this up. I agree that the segments provide some extra motivation to "drop the hammer" (although I don't have a hammer, per se). Maybe a tack hammer. I usually ride alone, too, and it's good to get some kudos and external motivation.

Posted my first ride of the year! Although not sure it shows up automatically on the clydesdale/athena club page? Mine was manually entered, as my Garmin Edge 200 arrived yesterday but I was already at my girlfriends for the weekend...

Will update this week with a few rides, using the new Garmin :)

I dont think you do unless the Zephyr is supported explicity by the app. I believe most users are using the standalon, bike specific, GPS systems like the Garmin 500 or 705. They natively support HR etc.

bummer, that alone kills the deal, back to sports track pro. or maybe i can run both at the same time? can 2 apps use the GPS at once? we'll see tomorrow...

i have used endomondo and strava at the same time...on my android, seemed to work fine. luckily i have a garmin that im now using for strava untill android HR is online. Strava is pretty cool with the segments and all! of course for years i have worn a HR but never really used the data for anything substantial. but either way its what im used to!

good luck.

Anyone else not believe Strava's calorie calculations? I am getting 320 calories for 56 minutes of riding at an average of 13.6mph! My Garmin Edge gives me 843 which is probably closer...

Maybe there is just a glitch in their system?

The Garmins are famously "way off" on calorie count - Id go with the Strava/Garmin average.

Most calculators give me around 700 for my ride info/weight.

Oh well, guess I will just ride and forget about calories burned, its obvious NO one knows the real calories burned without probably a really expensive machine.

I was not aware of this, but it makes me feel better. I have a Garmin 800, and it records FAR lower than my old Sigma bike computer. I have also used RunKeeper on my Android with a HR monitor, and it was usually higher than the Garmin offerings.

I just did a 6 mile jaunt and got 381 from garmin vs 248 from Strava (same data source, btw, my garmin)

I really don't care what it says, I don't take it into account anyway.

Strava extracts your waiting time... I just uploaded the same ride to strava and garmin FROM my garmin and the mph is 2 mph different (tons of stop lights tonight, ugh), the elevation is nearly identical, time is nearly identical, max speed is different by 0.2 (how is that possible? Same data).

I had larger differences when I used my android strava app at teh same time as the garmin 500 but I trust the garmin enough now to save my phone battery.

Join the gang on Strava Beanz, it's cool. Maybe you'll shame me into tackling GMR sooner than I want to.

I did join the Clydes but this can get scary. I see all the little segments that people post and think "I can beat that":D

I only go as fast as Gina's let's me but if she turns me loose, I'll get nuts on Strava with all the little segments posted!:D

I just might have to start an account for her too.I ride just about every ride so I'm getting kilt on GMR.

You know... and this is merely a suggestion... but once you figure out where the segments are you can just haul butt to the top and then sit tight. (hit pause on the ol' Garmin) until Gina gets there.

Those little segments are something, who knew they could be so enticing. I set a PR on this nasty little hill on Bastunchary today (from Associated up) but some clown marked that stretch of road as dangerous so they won't show rankings. It's probably better, it's bad for my ego to be 361 out of 362. :D

There's a free code posted on the clyde club so you can try the premium service out for a month if you want. The HR analysis is interesting but I'm not sure what to do with it just yet.

That's my plan, find the segments and haul booty. Gina won't be far behind but from what I seee, a minute can make the difference on the rankings.

I upgraded for the free period, pretty cool but I dont use any HR or power meters.

Check this out. This is actually Gina's time on this section of SART since we ride together. If I could accurately record her times, she might get some awards ha ha! Narrowed down to Clyde club times. ;)

These others guys have powermeters though.:twitchy:

Well, one of them is me and no, I don't have a power meter.... people with power meters have little lightning bolts next to the watt measurement. (You have to enter your weight and then strava guesses at your power output). Gina was cooking! I mean, on a bike, not in the kitchen.

Go look at the Yorba Regional Park Straightaway segment and sort by clydes, I like that one better.

I joined, but what I really need on Strava is the ability to combine classes, e.g. Clydesdales over 60. Then I would have a chance!

You can kind of do that when you look at the segment pages. You can filter out the skinny people and young 'ens on the left of the leaderboard.

Yep - all you need is a heart rate monitor and Strava will give a guess as to how many watts you put out. I have no idea how accurate those numbers are, but we clydes can show some impressive watts. Frequently, my wattage is considerable higher than those who beat me up a hill. That makes me feel better anyway

EDIT: Nevermind, all you have to do is fill in your profile with your weight and it will do watts. The HRM allows Strava to calculate the Suffer Score.

TrojanHorse
03-23-12, 01:24 PM
Really? My elevation numbers have been pretty good... the garmin gives me strange results sometimes unless I click on the "compensation" button to account for actual survey data.

Also, you need to be a paying member (Friday power tip - there's a free trial code on the clyde club home page) to sort the results.

I didn't know it was the HRM giving the power results, I thought it was more to do with speed, altitude changes and other calculated stuff. They obviously can't account for wind, maybe that's where HR comes in. No clue.

Strava is rough on the ego, I am not last on the segments but in the bottom % on most of them :(

I am so tempted to drive to one segment and go flat out just for that segment.

Question whats the thing with the watts?

sjvcycler
04-10-12, 04:40 PM
watts are the measured power coming from a device mounted in the hub or crank of a bike. Garmin also sells some pedals. Strava tries to approximate power as well.

First generic google hit:

As I suspected, I uploaded my ride from Sunday to Strava and on one segment, I was #393 out of 394. I'm pretty sure it's because I waited for somebody just a hair short of the top, or at least that's what I'm telling myself. I went and uploaded a ride from a month ago that covered the same territory and it wasn't that bad so maybe I'm right.

So what are the benefits of premium membership?

And what's up with people claiming to do 43 mph UP A HILL! Some of the statistics in there are laughable.

I think I might actually like the social aspect - seeing some of the other rides popping up there got me motivated to go for a spin tonight instead of working. :)

I think they go through and clean those up, a segment near me had a guy riding the speed limit one day and that was gone the next.

there is a segment called FORE! someone spray painted on the ground a line and the word FORE! so you know where it starts.

Hahahaha! :D I've even some segments on the flat sections of the flat trail labeled as climbs. 30 second climbs on the flat trail, C'mon! I never figured someone would even care about this section. Other sections, 1 milers with a slight downhill and huge tailwind? Sheesh! These are the sections I use to recover from the tougher headwind sections. But somebody races them ha ha! :D

I'm more concerned with the 1 -8 miles climbing sections. Maybe even the 20 mile climbs. Even at my best I'll get 50% at best but these climbers out here are monsters so I don't feel bad.:p But 30 second downhill sections, ha ha, more funny than competition!

Some segments are so silly I can't even figure them out while looking at the Strava segemtn maps.:D

I've flagged several rides/segments, gave the reason, and they were gone almost instantly. Can't be some techno-geek sitting at a terminal somewhere monitoring all that stuff. Has to be automatic filtering software somewhere. I'm more and more impressed with the computer programing that Strava has done on their site.

the segment finder is somewhat nice. i tried to use strava to find some Hills for me. its cool to have the cat 4-1 sorting. sadly cant find any segments better the cat 4 anywhere close. So i guess i will work on my flat land speed.

some people create a .5 mile segments, i am like ?????????? I get the short segments around me, many stop lights. but why even create one that short?

BTW people who say wind is like climbing is 100% false, a hill/mountain has a visual end to the suffering. Wind is random and has random gusts, at least with climbing you can see when the road tilts a bit more up.

It depends on the wind. If the winds so strong it pushes you back its close. Though, since you live in the windy city and I in central, ca, there might be a bit of a wind difference.
