Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Strava Users?? Clydesdales/Athenas Group?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
It depends on the wind. If the winds so strong it pushes you back its close. Though, since you live in the windy city and I in central, ca, there might be a bit of a wind difference.
windy city moniker comes from our crooked politicians blowing wind out their mouths. but it is darn windy here in spring and fall. monday we had 30-45mph wind gust. i drove to work all week ;)

You bunch of cowards! Hiding behind your "real" names on Strava. There are a few exceptions who make it easy to connect their performances to their bike forums user name. Thanks Beanz.
Oh, wait. Maybe I should change my name? Nah, what would the point be? Either way, I'm a "Fred".

Hahaha! :D Not sure it's a coward thing, other riders using real names. Might be a noob thing. There have been times I have signed up for a site and because it asked for my name I used it then realized it was using that name as my user name. Dang! Then I had to go back and change it to the desired username.
In this case, I was just one step ahead after having encountered the issue years back.:D

I don't think it can be considered noob, Facebook has changed the way people interact online and with their privacy by allowing other sites to access Facebook data. How many people signed up using their Facebook login? I didn't, but I didn't sign up to join clubs. I love the segment feature! :D

Holy cats - you too? I haven't dropped a bottle in 10 years and I dropped one TWICE last Saturday.
As for shorter segments - I can explain why they exist. The street I live on is a great climbing hill (if you're into that sort of thing) but I live in the middle. I'll rarely do the whole thing so I broke it in half just for giggles. That way I can keep track of where I am relative to last time I rode but physics being what it is, I'll never have the KOM.

You guys are the best. So much encouragement. I hope you don't feel like I'm sandbagging somehow (Dan H.) by being in your group. I am still around 205, so a borderline ex-clyde. To all of you out there, keep it up, I was almost 300 pounds a little more than a year ago.

Is "premium membership" worth it? How much more do you get? They don't do a very good job of showing you what you have to gain from upgrading, beyond telling you that they'll grade your rides on a "suffer" scale and provide the ability to sort by age and weight.
Any premium members want to give me an idea of how they determine the "sufferage" score? Maybe tell me how much I suffered on 15/04/12. I'm pretty sure that's one score that would be counterproductive to chase much. Doing so, would probably lead to too much aerobic threashold work at the expense of strength, speed and endurance.

I got my one month premie membership with the code mentioned earlier in the thread. About to expire but the price si pretty heavy IMO. I see I can compare my times to others in age categories and weight categories. Other than that, I don't see the need. I don't use a hr monitor so the suffer thingy won't do my any good. ;)
I did see a post from a few months ago where the trial period was like 3 months. If I run acorss one of those, I'll use the premie again but doubt I'd pay that kind of price for so little extra. $60 per year?

You know, if you have a HR monitor, it's kind of cool the way they break down your zones.
You can see what it looks like if you want to check out a few rides I did. Here's today's ride: http://app.strava.com/rides/6794867 and here's last Saturday's ride: http://app.strava.com/rides/6355046
I felt MUCH stronger last Saturday, not sure why, and you can see that I worked much harder too (last week, I mean.) I'm coming up on the end of my premium membership in a few days (somebody posted a trial code so i tried it) and I think I might extend it. The HR info I see here is more interesting to me than the HR info I see at garmin's website.
I would say if you don't use a HR monitor that it's not worth it - there are plenty of benefits that you can derive from Strava without premium membership. There are plenty of riders using Strava around here though, and even a few clydes. I'm sure Beanz noticed that even though he set his PR on "3 mile TT" today on the Santa Ana river trail, I still smoked him. Of course, he torched me on plenty of other segments on that same route, so really it's just a bit of motivation that tells me I can improve. Watching a pro rider blast up a hill provides no such motivation.
Mr. Beanz
04-15-12, 08:36 PM
I'm sure Beanz noticed that even though he set his PR on "3 mile TT" today on the Santa Ana river trail, I still smoked him.
OK wait a minute wait a minute. Doing a 33 mile ride at 14.0 average is not smoking a rider that did a 44 mile ride at 17.8. It only means you went all out on one 3 mile segment. ;)
Not to mention that the 3 mile segment is at the start of my course and a warm up (yours wasn't). So if you consider a 40 second advantage as "smoking" someone on a warm up. :D
TrojanHorse
04-15-12, 09:18 PM
Smoked is smoked, that's all I have to say. So... you noticed that little dig, did you? :D
Bah, that wasn't a warmup, that was well into the ride. Tailwind though, I'll give you that. The return was miserable, ergo the average speed stunk. Maybe it would have been better if I was drafting some speedy chick bikers?

I have yet to better that average speed.
The winds were with me and I must have hit every other green light that evening.
I was also fighting daylight, and had no bike light on me, so I had to push pretty hard to squeeze that ride in after work.
Not too bad for a then 300lbs 6'3" uber clyde.

Nah! I was training for a big ride. I was climbing in the mountains and throughout the entire ride, I kept hearing "Burning Love" in my head, by Elvis. :D
Can I upload a saved ride from Endomundo to Strava? I forgot to turn on my Strava app on day one of my new training.

By the way, if any of you enjoyed the free month of Strava premium and would like to sign up to pay for it, I found a $10 off discount code - TTMEREDITH10. Makes it $49 for a year, or roughly 4.9 lunches :) .
I figured I'll enjoy the HR breakdowns and whatnot, at least until they get sued off planet earth by Icon Health (owner of Nordicktrack among other things). Polar, MapMyFitness & Garmin are also named in the suit.

My totally not lawyer and totally not reading the whole complaint leads me to believe they're talking about two different things - ergo controlling the machine with a computer rather than simply uploading and tracking data.
It seems like there are no shortage of companies in this world who exist by predatory legal practices including a few in the cycling world (looking at you specialized!)

I'm no expert, and I haven't read the entire complaint, either, but it sounds to me like they have an issue with Strava selling the Garmin products, which are bundled with membership.

Clydes don't have to settle for back of the pack. I'm feeling pretty good about this one:

There's still plenty of room for me to improvement. However, the low hanging fruit has been plucked. From here, it's going to take significant gains to move up the ranks much.

So, let's see a link to your "most recent" GMR Beanz.
I'm still not unhappy with the whitford segments. And, was just trying to provide a little motivation to a few clydes who have commented on always being near the last of whatever number greater than 1. I figured if I put some effort into the whitford gorge section of the ride, I could get to just about where I a got this morning. The really scary thing is clicking on the KOM's ride and noticing that it had been at a steady HR of 150-155 for the entire ride. I suspect it was a recovery ride, or, at most a tempo ride for him. And, climbing at >1200 VAM! I'm not going to be achieving that any time soon. But, I'm sure I have more in the tank.
The goal remains: Taupo in under 6 hrs. That'll be decided in November.
