I am thinking about getting the speedplay x/3's since they are in my budget now. I dont always have a 100 extra dollars. I have heard of some maintenance issues with these pedals. Does any one have experience with them, good or bad I would like to know. Thanks

I've found some interesting stuff on Speedplays through a search of this site. You might try that . I've been useing the x3's for just a couple of weeks and I like them very much . Very comfortable .
I have had no knee problems to date , so I can not speak to that .
Maintenance issues are not yet apparent.
Again , if you don't get what you are looking for on this thread , try the search as I did .

loooove my speedplays!! they're my first pair of clipless (i started riding less than a year ago). as i had nothing to compare it to, i didnt have that ice skating reaction that some people report. plus, my knees are notoriously fussy buggers and i havent had any problems so far...

Speedplays are pretty easy mechanically. About the only thing you really need to do to them is inject some grease every so often. There is a little plastic cap on the ends that pops off and you insert a fitting (I think it's supplied with the pedals, but if not your LBS should be able to get one for you) and sqeeze some grease in there.
Taking them fully apart is relatively simple for pehaps an annual overhaul.
The only issue I have with the X-3's is that the pedals use bushings. I would recommend spending the extra $30 (I think) and getting the X-2. These have sealed bearings and a stainless steel axle.

A2
the x/3 's are 90 here and the x/2's are 164. Those are the best prices I have been able to find here.

I've riden on Old School LOOK pedals, new style, LOOK, SPDs for mountain bikes, and now ride Speedplay X2 for the last 4 years. Never regretted them and got used to the float within a few rides. I actually think I'm a better, smoother rider as a result of using these pedals.
Maintenance is easy although I rarely do anything except put a few drops of White Lightening on the grooves to easy engagement of the cleat. The only thing about the cleats (and this applies to almost all road cleats) is that they will wear out if you walk on hard pavement very much and they are pricey to replace. I've replaced them twice (every two years).
I'm riding X2s and my wife is using X3s.
we've had em over a year, and other than
needing to lube em they require NO maintenace.
Be aware that if you tighten down the cleat
too much (when mounting to shoe) that clipping in
can be difficult.

Speedplay makes covers for the cleats. I think they are called "Coffee Shop Caps" about $10. US

Hi,
I'm not to experienced with speedplays road stuff, but I can say that the Frogs, their mountain pedals require very little maintance, from what my boss, and my riding buddy tell me. Just eh above mentioned stuff, a little grease into the port and some lube on the cleat. I'm probably gonna get a pair before I go on my 2200 km bike tour. (I don't like walking like a duck, so I'm probably gonna end up with the frogs).
Hope you find what you like

I actually have a pair of the Speedplay covers, but often forget to bring them along on rides. I've even had the embarassing moment of putting them on at a rest stop or food stop and when leaving the place I go to step in the pedal and forgot that they were still on. Then I have to stop and everybody waits, teases me or takes off without me. And I call them friends;)
Also I've noticed that you are walking around a coffee shop and someone will notice that it slipped off and if you didn't realize it it will be lost forever.
Your reminder will make be take them out and stick them in my jersey pocket. Thanks. I'll just have to get used to taking them off and keeping closer track of them. Duh!
