Bicycle Mechanics - My chain got stuck between the chain ring and the frame a few days ago

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It was really cold and I was on my way to work when I shifted to my lowest chain ring. The chain came off and got wedged in between the chain rings and the chain stay. I tugged a little and it wouldn't budge. I tried manually back pedaling, but it didn't come undone. After a minute of gentle experiments, I was getting really cold, so I just yanked the chain out. It took a little muscle. It also ripped off quite a nice chunk of paint. I can see bare metal.

So I'm worried about the frame exposure. It's gonna get a lot of muck and road salt in it. Is there danger here? Might the frame be weakened if I don't take action? What should I do?

It's steel, so I will try that.

While your at it, check your front derailler low limit adjustment to avoid a repeat performance.

I will do that. I've been riding this bike about 60 miles a week for a few months and this is the first time something like this has happened.

Well since its steel i wouldnt worry, that happened ot me a while back. I make it a habit to check the front der. and make sure it only allows the chain to move to the right point, seems to help

It is, and it does. :)

You can buy an anti-chain suck thing for the bike, too. I put one on my Attitude after getting it *real* bad once. I don't think that you would necessarily have to do that if you're riding on the road.
